I got stopped tonight cop gave me a ticket for no front licence plate and for a modified intake IE: my Cold air intake. On the ticket it says i have to go to a smog referee to clear it. Any one know what exactlay a smog referee is?

Man , they must really be strict where you are at.
I know in virginia they can stop you for Performance exhaust or any exhaust that is not of original factory specs. But they rarely enforce this law unless it is too loud.

I would recheck your laws. I bet he can not open you hood with out permission. i know they can look into a car but can not go inside, open anything with your your permission.

Now if he does a safty inspection he could look under the hood but he must do a full inspection then give you a sticker so you dont get hasseled again.

next time they want to look under the hood, tell em to get a warrent.

I would deff check into the laws on that. What do all these euros do on theirs?? Do they get tickets?? As far as I see, If it passes emissions, it should be fine. And why would a CAI not pass emissions?? what did you get pulled over for in the first place??

I seen a show, think it was on MTV, of all places, or some other channel about street racing. Had cops just to bust them up. they were mentioning tickets about illegal intakes. ( Maybe they were reported stolen from SLP or ARP) :sillylol:

I will admit i was partialy at fault were i was i hadent gone to the street races in 2 years since i got my last ticket for a 66.5 foot burn out i won that in court but any ways. CHP came blcoekd off the road on both ends and started writing tickets. The cop was all why are u here i was totaly honest with him then hes all pop your hood so i did and he saw the CAI and wrotr the ticket on that. And my front licence palte. I was reading up on the ticket last night i have the veichle code book i can get the front licence plate dismissed and also get the intake approved by a smog referee then basicly i wont have a ticket. ON A SIDE NOT THEY HAD THIS PAPER that they were lookin off off to check for illegal mods all of which are around honda's well the cop acccdently gave me his copy its halerious one part talks about joe street racer.

All i wana know is what a smog ref is from what i herd i take it to a smog place and he descides if the intake is legal or illegal if its illegal i get fined if its leagel i have to show the judge what the smog ref guy said.

That's CRAZY man. No front plate and a CAI??? What the...?? They should go over to the speedway in Irwindale, I bet they'd get a lot of ricers with illegal intakes. I think I can use my excuse that my car never came with a front plate. I have a place to mount it too, the hinges I put under my front clip. My car's plate is original, so it might work. FAST RS, is yours the original plate?

I told him i bought the car with out a front plate. I can go to the CHP station like 30 seconds away driving from me and show them i corrected the problem and have them write it off so i dont pay a fine on that I have the front bracket and plate im jsut gonna use 3m double sided sitcky tape put it on drive home take it off. But the air intake im going to look into.

UNLESS YOU WANT PULLED OVER ALL; THE TIME I WOULD LEAVE IT ON. EVEN IF THE CAR WAS MADE WITHOUT ONE

newer cars come with plastic cover plates over the front one and you can get away with it for a while but why give them an excuess to pull you over any time they want. if you dont break any visiable law, they can not bug you.

Phone my Friend in Santa Monica (310-399-7221) & ask him for the phone number of the CA Smog Referee.
I suggest you call right away.
Be prepared to pay a "fee" for their service.
Front license plate.
ALL vehicles leave the factory with attachments for front license plates.
Two sheet rock screws (1 1/2") hold the plate perfect. And the holes are size of pencil points.
If state requires you to have two, you better produce them & install them.
AND KEEP THEM INSTALLED. Cop don't see that plate, instant pull you over & they can start searching for more, too.
PS, Try to stop them. They beg you to try to stop them (nod-nod-wink-wink).
Plate ticket fee is $10 dismissal, IF still that cheap. Thats what it cost me last year.
May be more, now & not kidding.

I know around here, a lot of the import guys swap their modded parts out (i.e. CAI) and put the stock stuff on when they take the car to get smogged. After they pass the inspection, they go home and put all of it back on. Unless your CAI is manufactured by some big company and it has a carb #, they may make you put your stock intake back on. It's so stupid, the people that write the laws don't know anything about cars. They think that any engine mods will cause an increase in pollution unless they're certified by the EPA or whoever does it.

Check laws.. this looks like cause for unreasonable search and seizure in the constitution.. I got pulled over and he wanted me to pop my hood when i was in california, and i asked him why, and he said im checking for your mods.. i started in on the unreasonable search and seizure, he walked off in the middle of my talking got in his car and took off like a bat outta hell.. id talk 2 a lawyer if they try and stick it. I got my car smoged monday passed with flying colors it was a test only. He said my CAI was legal it had all the hookups and if i had it on he would of smogged it with that on. He gave me the number to a frined of his a smog ref.
How do i go to court the curt date he put on the ticket was 8/12/02 i got my ticket 08/18/02 go figure.
and yes it was CHP

Cop's "picky" tickets can easily be fought. I fought a ticket for "speeding past a school bus stop" Unfourtunatly (for the cop) I proved the bus stop was at a stop sign , But before hand got him set up by admitting that I stopped for the stop sign. Then the judge looked at me and asked what revelence this had. So I asked the cop if he even got a clock on my speed using any meathod at all. No. Radar?, no I could not get a lock, Pace? no I could not stay at a consistant distance. Quesses?, yes I think he was doing between 30-40 MPH in a 20. (judge starts to look confident) So I ask the cop how accurate his speedo is. It's state certified to be accurate. I ask to see this BS certifacation(I had already looked these laws up and knew he was lying)... Uh uh no I do not have it with me. I move to have to have the testimony stricken, as it is unprovable. Judge aggrees. I ask the cop just how old the car he was driving was. 85 Chevy caprice. I state for the record that I work as a mechanic, and that ALL parts are made to fail. I ask the cop had the speedometer gear ever been replaced? No. Had the speedo cable ever been replaced? No. I then move for dismissal stating that the State had proved by its own admission that I had stopped at the stop sign(WHERE THE BUS STOP WAS LOCATED) and that there is no possible way that the officer could by any known reasonable means have known my actual speed. Judge agreed. I won.

Now that no front plate thing. YES you can have it dissmissed, by proving that your car came with the "NO FRONT PLATE OPTION" YES IT WAS A OPTION NOT REQUIRED!. Just like the new camaro/firebird, Z06's do not have them. When you go to court you ask I will put the plate on by drilling holes into my undamaged bumper cover if the state will give me the required 300+ to buy a new one to replace the damaged one when I go to sell the vehicle.
In VA I had 4 tickets for no front plate, every time I went in with the RPO codes and said this car IS from florida(had window sticker and sales broucure from dealer) and did not come with that bracket FROM THE FACTORY. After I tell them the above statement(about buying me a new bumper cover) they dismiss it.

I saw that sht on TV a few weeks ago- it really ticked me off. Doing donuts is one thing, but in a crowd full of people? And then the drunk people try to run at the car while it's spinning around? Frickin' idiots. And of course, guess what guys, front wheel drive imports can't do that- the cars on the news were Firebirds, Camaros, and Mustangs. I walked in as my dad was watching it, and he heard me curse up a storm at those dipshts.

So now the "heat" is off of Imports, and back on us, and all because of a few drunken fcks that shouldn't deserve to own a muscle/pony car at all.

Again. CA State legislature has given the CHP "Broad Means" of "enforcement" to curb the latest real stupidity going on late on the streets.
EVEN AT A LEGAL SANCTIONED DRAG RACING PLACE IN LA (Irwindale, CA), there was a shooting & killing.
The CA cops are not playing with a half deck when you are ticketed. Especially the CHP.

I paid the ten buck fine & have my plate on all times. I don't want the aggrivation of being pulled over at all or ever anymore. Don't care about the pencil point holes in the bumper-ask anyone who has seen my front bumper to really know why....
I fought the law when the laws weren't as harsh on an arugement of common sense.

Either take a lawyer or plead not gulity. It will be thrown out of court. any mistake on a ticket like that wil get it tossed out.

even though he wrote down the wrong date to go, they computer will assume you know the right day to go and if you dont, you now have a warrent out for your arrest for a no show. which will get your car towed and a nice ride downtown. even if it is there mistake.


I would just show up at court monday 9am.
