91 3.1L, any common issues?
hey guys, im looking to pick up a low mileage 91 firebird this weekend. Its a 3.1L auto car, and i've never dealt with this motor. Are there any common issues or problems with this motor that i should be aware with? Anything else about the year that i may want to check before i buy it? aside from the usual northern rot issues?

Not starting....haha just messin that just seems to be my car :/. I've heard from a lot of people that the 3.1l was the best v6 that chevy made and that it is very relliable. Good luck on the car.

I just picked one up last week for free from a friend. Surprisingly it cranked right up no problem after sitting for three years and with a little tlc it is running pretty smooth except for a few minor quirks.I have seen a lot about idle problems just from reading through this forum. I would just take some time and read through some things others have said and you will get a clue about usual problems. Good luck I just started on mine and can't wait til I am finished if I ever am

Yup, 60* v6's are extremely reliable. If its in nice shape and the price is right, you wont be dissapointed.

only 2 things come to mind, and they arent even really issues.
the digital egr valve likes to mess up,usually cleaning the valve works
and if its got a decent amount of miles on it do a timing chain on it

well its supposed to be in great shape minus some paint chipping off the hood. All the injectors, fuel related relays, maf, tps, pump relay, dizzy, coil, wires, plugs ect are brand new, and the car has 59k miles.
So long as the underside is clean, its mine saturday, just have to trailer it home.

looked at the car Saturday, its was a lot rougher than it came out in the pics, and had some serious rot forming on the floor just ahead of the driverside door, its a shame, such a low mile car in good running order. Scrap it!

Re: 91 3.1L, any common issues?
well after 5 years with this motor the worst thing i had was the Fan relay would just burn itself out but at 5 dollars a pop i keep a stock pile of them in the summer time
here a little history of my 3.1 v6
it overheated 3 times not by much 269f was the most
flooded with water 2 times flood with gas once
and even after all this she still runs strong
if it ever dies im not going to get to mad knowing the history lol
