very high oil pressure on '88 camaro 2.8 v6

Hello everyone

My camaro appears to have an abnormally high oil pressure, the gauge is pinned @ around 120psi both when running and when the engine is off, which is 40psi over what the maximum the guage is meant to say. obviously this has caused a great concern as it read 35 odd psi on average only yesterday

is there anything serious i should take a look at or is this a common thing?

thanks

this is the stock gauge i assume? the stock gauges are not very accurate, and are really for referance only and not the rear pressure. however, a wire could also be shorted/broken, causing the high reading, or the sender could be bad. Honestly, its probably just the gauge not working right.

yes, it is a stock gauge, i was thinking it might be a problem with the gauge or sensor seeing as half of the electrics have gone one at a time :P

cheers for the help, i'll get a mech gauge on the job

I have the same issue in mine. The pressure was off the gauge and I changed the sending unit, now it reads 80 until it's hot, then after it gets hot it will read 30ish at idle and 80 if you bring the rpms up at all.

Re: very high oil pressure on '88 camaro 2.8 v6

Sending unit by the oil filter needs to be replaced. Thing with GM gauges is that when the sending unit or wiring between the gauge and the sender goes, the gauges will read high (as opposed to others which won't read at all). Stock calibration for the pressure regulator spring in the oil pump is 70 PSI. Yours probably read properly the other day due to a vibration or something temporarily restoring the connection to the gauge from the sending unit.

Re: very high oil pressure on '88 camaro 2.8 v6

I have a 2.8 V6 with 80,000 miles on it. My gauge is all over the place. Sometimes reading no pressure at all, sometimes a 20/40/60, just depends on what it feels like doing. I've checked the oil level, it's ok; and I replaced the sending unit, no change...

Check the wiring at the oil pressure sender. Sounds like a bad connection or broken wire. The white one in particular is the one that's got the problem.

Re: very high oil pressure on '88 camaro 2.8 v6

The guys are right one about the sender. Mine in my '88 did the same and the cause was the plastic case cracked inside the connector which allows oil to wick up and short out the terminals which causes no reading, high readings and unstable readings.

Re: very high oil pressure on '88 camaro 2.8 v6

My firebird has the 3.1L V6 and I just replaced the oil pressure sensor because the oil pressure was at 0, its fine now, but my oil pressure goes up to 80 and time the engine is warming up, or being operated, but occasionally when when its warm will be around 35-40 at idle, but the problem is, the motor oil drips and drops from the oil filter like a leaky faucet, I've replace the oil filter twice, still does it..
I did put 10w30 vs. 5w30 on the last change, but that's when the pressure was low, could it be the oil?..
Thanks in advance.

The next time you take the oil filter off, make sure there isn't another filter gasket stuck to the adaptor. Also, check to make sure the adaptor bolt is in tight. There is a gasket and o-rings that can be replaced if everything else seems okay.
