Worst Day Ever! Camaro Died.

1987 V6 Camaro 2.8L

Before this I was going 90-95 on the highway for about 2 minutes. Shortly after about 10-15 minutes...down the road in stop and go traffic...I was punching it on the bottom of a steep hill...halfway up the Camaro just wouldn't receive anymore gas. It just clunked out. Tried to start it several times...nada...I did pull the ECM fuse and no go, no codes before or after. Pulled over to the right, hazards on...state police where there so freaking fast to get me a wrecker I had no time to check it out...it was a state road so I couldn't look at it on the road.

Had it towed to a shop ($200 later) I use to use along time ago...I usually do my own work.

What do you guys think it could be? (The shop didn't get back to me today)

Just about everything has been changed except the internals...and the fuel pump and fuel pressure reg. Damn... don't want to lose my Camaro! :| This includes, the dizzy, ICM (twice), Ignition coil, wires, plugs, oil, radiator, sensors (maf, IAT, CTS, IAC, I'm sure there is more), refurbished fuel injectors, new gaskets, new rear main, new mounts...just about everything.

oh and there was no leaks...I did check for that. :P

All over the highway systems...I usually do 80-90 in burst all day in CT. Everyone does...they just don't realize it with a modern motor...lol

Damn, getting a Passat if this goes south.

Re: Worst Day Ever! Camaro Died.

If it won't start, it's either fuel or spark. As you've replaced everything but the fuel pump, I'd look at that first. Pull a plug after cranking, see if its wet, also crank it with a plug pulled and see if it's sparking.

Re: Worst Day Ever! Camaro Died.

Eh, just wondering if he quotes me $1000 is it worth it. :|

Anyone know how much a fuel pump replacement runs?

Probably better off buying a used fuel efficient car for $5-6K. Hmm.

Re: Worst Day Ever! Camaro Died.

Just like Malcom said, check fuel and spark. It's usually spark but the fuel pump seems to be a weak spot on these cars. Oh, just a thought. Your car would probably be a little more fuel efficient if you didn't do the 90-95. Good luck!

Re: Worst Day Ever! Camaro Died.

1. No/low fuel pressure (pump or strainer sock or something between the tank and the filter). Also check the fuel pump relay and the oil pressure switch. Your 87 uses 2 different oil pressure units (or should), so just because the dash gauge worked or the light didn't come on doesn't mean the fuel pump switch does. And, if the fuel pump relay goes out and the switch doesn't work, the fuel pump shuts off, period.
2. The wire between the dizzy and the ignition coil broke (I had one break at the dizzy connector). Check for spark.
3. ECM died.

Check for spark and fuel pressure first (minimum 37 PSI). Or have them do it...

I have to admit, you CT guys are crazy, the speeds you go with the cops just ignoring you while you're doing it. Also loved the way the cops just sat in the divider between the exits and the highway...

The problem isn't I didn't want to. I really thought it was the fuel pump...and that I didn't want to do...If it was a normal road I would of done my tests.....This sucks now because he saying it isn't and anything not fuel pump related or internally I could of solved myself. UGH

Re: Worst Day Ever! Camaro Died.

both the coil and fuel pump can be fed power direct from the battery with a jumper wire, by passing any switches n wiring, if it won't run then, ign or fuel is bad, if it does run.... backwards trace from there whats stopping it from getting power.

glad I got an access door for my FP, air chisels can be handy

Re: Worst Day Ever! Camaro Died.

What were the exact symptoms?

My fuel pump died on the road about 10 years back (lack of changing fuel filter and a habit of running it to fumes, oops) and it was fine, then suddenly like it was starved for fuel, kinda chugging for a few seconds, then off. It would crank just fine, but absolutely no hint of turning over on its own.

Symptoms were: Drove super great...was going up a steep hill and gained speed at the bottom. Pressed gas while going up...it didn't respond and wasn't running while still moving from the speed. Pulled over, no codes, cranked but didn't start. Didn't sound like it wanted to either.

Oh and my fuel filter has been changed 8 months ago. AC Delco too.

Re: Worst Day Ever! Camaro Died.

when mine did that once, it was the tach wire on the coil, cheap quick connects for a tach cut it nearly in two, only 3 copper strands holding.

Re: Worst Day Ever! Camaro Died.

this happened to me a few months back and my fuel filter was clogged.
id say just haul it back to your house and throw on some thermals and double glove and start testing. or see if the shop will let you test things at their shop.
i read the thread and didnt see if you could crank it. does it crank? i assume so.
does the fuel pump prime when the ignition is on??
start with the basics(not removing big stuff) and go from there.

If you disconnect the tach wire...it should run fine without it...right? All it is, is a signal for the tach.

I'll update ya guys tomorrow...he said to call back tomorrow. He said he was thinking distributor...I just changed the dizzy....and the ICM twice...lol...I doubt it.

Re: Worst Day Ever! Camaro Died.

Turned out to be the ICM for the 3th time. -_-

They said it could be because the harness connector has a broken tab that it shorts the ICM. I had it taped really good...they originally broke it before I bought the car. -_-

Anyone have spare connectors for me?
