Autometer speedometer
I have an 86 z and I am replacing all of my stock gauges with autometer ones. I am just about to put a new rear in with 3:73s and I was curious to what the autometer speedo comes with to adjust the speed? Is it pretty easy to change it? Thanks for any help!!

I put the electronic one in mine. It is programable, so if you want to change it at any time, it is real easy. Push a button a couple times, drive 2 miles, its done.

i would be happy to have an electric one but isnt it like 91+ that had the electric or something like that? How would a sending unit be added so i could get one like that because that would be a really nice feaure. thanks
Also, do you have any pics of your gauge setup? since attachments are down could you email me any? I already have 4 of them and I am doing ultra lites too. Thanks

Oh yeah, I forgot that part. You would need to pick up either a sender from a 91+ F-body, or get the Autometer one.
I'll e-mail you some pictures.

thanks, that is almost exactly how I wiant to set mine up. What did you use as the face where all the gauges are mounted? it looks awesome really has a factory look to it. btw how does the electric sending unit work? I was thinking the new style it came from the transmission, im not real sure tho. I guess I will email autometer and ask about how thier sending unit works. Thanks for all the help!

There are 2 wires that come up from the sensor. One goes to the speedo, the other to ground. Other than the power for the gauge, and the light, thats about all the wires you have. I made up the template myself, and then transfered that to some 18ga sheet metal. After that I just cut holes, smoothed stuff down, and stuck it in the dash. After seeing how many people ask for a copy of the template, I have made some spares if you would like one.

try a search on this, a lot of helpful info when i was doing it. As you can see i too have an 86 and i had gotten the required sender from Autometer, it hooks right up to the trans and like mentioned above, has a few wires coming off of it. Looks simple enough, just have not done it yet. It cost around $65 IIRC. To install my guages i had a peice of carbon fiber cut out to my dash size and also used a dual guage pod on the a-pillar. try a search for more info, its been done before. good luck

With dual guage pod, shift lite, and 6 guages, close to $600 through Summit. They are even the ultra-lights and i got the electric 160mph speedo b/c i will probally never even see 120mph during normal driving! $1000 sounds like a lot, what did you want to get?

Look at that for about $500 if you like that look of digital gauges. I am sure Summit or Jegs would have it for less though but not much less.

years ago when i was really getting into hot rodding my 82 Z/28 i seen an add in Hot Rod or one of mags that had speedo and tach's in the digital version similar to the one site. i didn't really like them at the time but considering the alternatives or lack there of higher than 140 speedo's for 3rd Gens i think i'd go that route or slushes route. those look pretty good also! i think it's imperative to have a professional looking cluster set for a street rod and his is really clean looking! my friend ken from www.corvetteactioncenter.com redid his 87 vette with a good set of mechanical gauges that really make the dash look nice. i sorta like the digital in my 87 vette and the speedo goes to 200 mph :hail: although i only seen 165mph in it, it is a nice thing to have when you get the itch to do a ***** out test
i'm not sure how accurate it is though i'd guess with in 5-/+mph at those speeds. my previous top speed was numerous 140+ runs in the Z/28 with a 3 speed auto and 3:42 gears clocked with a Bike *crotch rocket's* speedo.
nice work slush! and nice ride! :hail:
