Anyone with AFR heads?

Was wanting to know what plug angle to get to work with my SLP headers. Not sure if our cars are straight or L98 style. SLP claims that sparkplug clearence is a problem with some aftermarket heads.

Plus how well do thay work? I am told by alot of peeps that they are great heads but I have also had a few peeps try and talk me out of them. Expecialy not to go with there 195cc???? Does anyone know y?

Thanx

Penile envy, that's why. Supposedly they cost way too much money... the fact of the matter is - you get what you pay for & speed isn't cheap.

As far as plug angle, I have Hooker LT's and the plug to header tube clearance is fine - not sure about the SLP's. If need be, you could always get the heads with straight plugs instead of angled.

AFR <- just in case you haven't already found their site.

Hawk....I am running SLP 1 3/4" headers with AFR 195 angle plug heads. The only tight plugs are 3, 5 & 8 and it is not that bad. I run the MSD 8.5 wires with boot covers on those boots and have never had a burned boot. As far as why not to use 195's would be if you are building a small inch motor like a 305. You may lose some velocity of on the intake side. I have mine on a 406 toped with a MiniRam and they make great power. As for price they are not anymore than other comparable heads on the market. I gave 1175 for mine 6 years ago and you can get the same heads for 1250 today.

Thanx guy's

I am running a 383 and need some good heads, got the old 305 heads on it right now "EEK" Was thinking on the 190cc AFR's, good flow rates listed for them. Glad to here u got no problem with your plugs, with SLP's warning and a few other peeps I have talked to about there clearence. I didnt want to make a mistake on what angle to get. Was thinking the L98 angle but wasnt sure if that was our angle or just the vettes.

What intake manifold are you running? Some intakes don't have quite enough meat on them to port match for the AFR 195's. If that is the case, go with the 190cc heads - you won't give up much, if any power by doing so.

If you have some stock iron GM heads on your 383 currently, you are going to think it is a whole new motor when you buy a real set of heads for it. Good luck with your project.

my 383 has AFR 210's on it.......all i can say about AFR is they have game, and like someone else already said, you get what you pay for.

if you call AFR they would probably help you out, they have a very friendly and helpful tech line. I have hooker super comps with 1 3/4" primaries....i have the straight plug heads too....the only clearance issue is on the number 7 plug, its real close, but with ceramic coated headers and good plug wires its not a problem.

AFR offer 3 plug locations.

Strait

Old GM Angle 492 /292 heads etc

Corvette Angle (new angle)

Ask them which you need.

Also ask them about what CC you need.

They will mill them to whatever size you need to around 58 cc

If I remember correctly, the SLP's have problems with the Angle plugs but not the L98 angle. Your best bet may be to ask AFR, they would probably know.

As far as plug angle with SLP headers I cannot comment but for power, they are awesome. I had pro ported LT1 heads on my 93 (T/A) and it ran good until I ruined one with a blown head gasket. I replaced them with new out of the box 190cc AFRs and WOW what a difference, no other changes and I even lost a bit of compression (went from the Impy head gasket to the stock one). With a slipping trannsmission I matched my previous best 1/4 run and surpassed my MPH!!! I like em, cant wait to tear up the motor to see how they work ported...lol

afr heads

I have SLP 1 5/8 and AFR 190s with the L98 angle plugs. Clearance on the #5 plug would be a problem with straight plugs. Even with angled plugs I had to cut down a plug socket (the style of socket you can use a wrench on) to about an inch long to tighten #5. I have 3/4" between the tube and the plug boot. Changing plugs on #6 and #8 are done from the bottom with a moderate amount of cussing.

Yeah, right! That is the base price, today after they make them what you want you can plan on $1900 + I just saw one of their invoices.
Go with the 190's.... far better if you can stand the tariff.

all three on birds and they are awesome heads as far as i'm concerned none better. had slp's on the last bird and the l98 angle the plug access is the same as the stock heads you tell me good or bad. guess it depends on your ability.as for the price my last set ran me 1650.should arrive this week
thats with them milled to 64cc,drilled for temp sensors, centerbolt covers valve spring upgrade,pc teflon valve seals and 7/16 studs.
they are the 190's.
