Hypertech performance chips
Hypertech performance chips
Just out of curiosity, I saw something on ebay called the hypertech performance chip. Can someone give me an idea as to what this would do? Specifically for my '84 firebird. v6 engine manual tranny.
Thanks in advance!

Why do say NOTHING.
Is it because it is a V6
Is it because the maker of the chip
Is is because no chip at all will do anything.
I have a V8 305, and I'm thinking about getting a chip from www.tbichips.com
So wil I notice anything on this chip??

You will note, I did not say all chips. Some aftermarket chips and DIY ones are quite good. Just make sure the one you get, will work in your application. My opinion.

The thing with chips is that mosta are generic with a computer controlled engine everything needs to work togeather so really the only time you should buy a chip is if you made some mods and the car runs like crap or when your bassically done with your engine modifications get a custom burned chip made for your combination so the computer can work correctly with your engine components

Hypertech Chip
I installed the Hypertech chip on my car and it made a noticeable difference, advanced the timing and opened up the secondaries (which is asking a lot for my car). I have an 86sc 305 with a 4bbl, which is probably why I saw the results. The performance increase from these aftermarket chips depends a lot on whether you have fuel injection or a carburetor, and what year your car is. If you have a late model third gen with fuel injection then you probably wont notice much of an improvement, but if you're stuck with that Rochester 4bbl then you should see a noticeable difference.
Also, if you've swapped out your stock cam then don't expect to see any improvement (in fact it may run worse with the chip). The chips are designed to improve a 'stock' engine set up, if you've already ripped into the engine with all sorts of mods then you wont get anything out of the chip as it's expecting to get stock data values at the sensors (if you still have them).
Some good news to report though on Hypertech: I read in the June issue of Chevy High Performance mag that Hypertech will be releasing a whole new system for third gen cars that will supercede the chip they now have. Hypertech is just finalizing the details on the package so they haven't made the official announcement yet (I called them to find out more and their customer support techs weren't even aware of it yet).
86 Camaro SC 305 4bbl (Original Owner 263,000 miles): K&N Air Filter with Xtreme Lid, Pertronix Flamethrower Coil, Hypertech Power Chip, Flowmaster Series 80 with Flowcat, American Racing Torque Thrusters (16”) with Toyo Proxes TPT’s (225/55/R16/95H).
Future Mods to Include: Edelbrock Headers and Dual Plane Manifold, CK Rods & B Hangers, Tranny Rebuild, Aluminum Driveshaft, 3.11 Posi Rear, KYB Shocks & Struts, Cowl Hood, B&M Ripper Shifter, Grant Steering Wheel. $$$$
