problem with Megashifter?

I've recently purchased a B&M Megashifter (actually from someone on this site) I have no complaints, but shifting through park, reverse and neutral is HARD AS HELL!!!!... I was just wondering if this is a common problem that someone else may have experienced, or mines just screwed up somehow. Any input appreciated... Thanks, Steve.

They are pretty stiff when they're new. You get used to it, and they do loosen up some over time.

It is claimed as a TUFF shifter from what I've heard. Mine is the same way I dont think yours is bad. Just my opinion.

question/ megashifter

When i try to ratchet it from 1st to 2nd it goes straight to 3rd or to neutral. Is it supposed to do this and what am I missing????

My linkage is not well adjusted but I did not think it had anything to do with it. Thanks!

88Spinner: it sounds like something is out of whack in there. You should have to ratchet back from drive to first, in order to rachet back up to drive.

IIRC, there's a pin and a couple of leaf springs that connect the shifter handle to the cable mechanism. One of these is most likely loose or missing. Take off the shifter boot, and watch the mechanism while you shift through the gears. You will probably notice something out of whack, or see something that should be there but isn't. Hard to say without seeing it.

Steve:- They are all quite stiff but double check the adjustment of the cable anyway. Check that there are absolutely no kinks at all.

Excuse me I am new to the shifter. When you say ratchet it do I put it in first and push it to second WITHOUT touching the t-handle anymore? Also when I put it in 1st should it be able to go into neutral? When I put it in first and push it up nothing stops it from going to 3rd and neutral. Everyone mentions how they throw the shifter and when I "throw" this one it wants to go into neutral. Thanks for any clarification.

I know I pretty much asked the same thing but I need some more clarification with "how to operate it." Just double checking myself.

With the shifter is in Drive, pull back on the handle. It should move back one 'notch' and stop. The PRNDL window should indicate 3rd gear (or 2nd on a 3-speed)
Release the handle and pull back again. You should now be in 2nd gear.
To go from Drive to 1st, you will need to pull back on the shifter three times.

Shifting from 1st to Drive is exatly the same. Each time you push the stick forward, it will move one gear and only one gear.
The way the shifter is designed, you can 'rachet' between any of the positions from 1st to Neutral (N-D-3-2-1), but to access Reverse and Park, you haave to be in Drive, and pull up on the lockout handle, the little one on the front of the shifter.

If your shifter can go from 1st to Neutral in one move, like you say, it's broken.

Thank you for the great explanation! Yhea, I think it is time to tear it apart or buy a new one. Another thing that sucks is it didnt come with a window just the shifter and the boot. Thanks again!

The spring like finger that goes into each of the teeth type gears may be out of adjustment. Just loosen the screw and watch to make sure the V of the finger goes into each gear and when you have the right spot; tigten the hold down screw.

mine was off a bit and I adjusted it. but then again what he's talking about may be something internal ....toward the bottom of the shifter where all the gears meet...sorry if Im wrong...

If his shift linkage at the tranny was out of wack; when you say tried to go to first or park--you cant. This would indicate that the cable at the tranny connection needs adjustment. I had the same problem as above until I adjusted the leaf spring as shown in the pics above.

Yeah, i have to get around to taking a look at that spring finger thing, it can be slid up or down, right? I don't know for sure, I haven't loosened the screw yet, but that's what it looked like. I Don't think there is a kink in the cable because I spent about 20 minutes with my dad just making sure everything was ok down below, and the only problem is with park and reverse. Maybe it does just need time to "break in". I'll have a look-see at that spring when I get a chance. Thanks guys. This seems to be quite a common thing, not just this but problems with these shiftrs in general. Hmm, oh well.

Sorry this is a little off topic, but can you guy's tell me what I can do to get the TC to lock-up. I was told I need some kind of relay from radioshack for this shifter. If so, how do you hook it up?? (bought it used)
