after installing the headers, i will need.....?
hey, just installed some edelbrock tes headers on my 89 iroc. i was j/w if i need a strarter heat shield and if so what kind (prefferably part #). also, wodnered since the A.I.R. was cut and welded over, what i need to do withthe air pump. right now i just have the airpump on and it's always running, but not running into anything. just the atmosphere. is this bad??? thanx a bunch
well if u dont have the a.i.r tubes any more you should really consider taking out the smog pump and the other hoses which go with it.
i didnt need a heat shield for my car but i used coated slp headers, but i assume these heat shield are to prevent any heat soak to the started from the hot headers, i cant really help on that issue i would just see if the car runs and starts fine with the shield.

hey. by the way nothing better than black 3rd gen formuls with the firehawk wheels. awesome!
what do i do to take off the smog pump? I've never really looked at it before even though i had the engine in and out several times. i just bolt and go. loli heard also that dialing in the TPS sensor to around 5.55 will help gas mileage. mine is set at like 6.4 or something which is said to be unnecessary in the camaro performance handbook. thanx

also. i have a heat shield, but once i put it on, it doesn't seem like it's covering the part of the starter that gets themost heat. ???????
well with the belt still on, simply unbolt the three bolts holding the pulley onto the pump, then unbolt the pump from the main bracket (that should be just 2 bolts).
a heat shield is a heat shield if its on right and it made to work and fit our cars then it must be ok i would think.

yeah, i don't know that it's made excactly for a 3rd gen but it's for sbc..... i mean how many different types of sbc starters are there??? not many that i know of. it just appears by looking at it that the starter is still exposed to the header by the flange.

i believe it is the smaller portion of the starter. the one where the wires connect.

yeah, the smaller portion is the solenoid. that's where the internal connections get heat soaked, causing the starter to die earlier. but the heat doesn't do the rest of the starter well, i used to use one of those wrap around starter heat blankets to be sure. now i use on of the high torque ones that you can flip upside down.

worked for me, i didn't have no coating on my headers, and i didn't have any problems with it after the wrap. it was the shiny little blanket thingy that had those metal zip ties with it, and went all the way around.
