i routinely change fluid so i use regular dexron 3
i will admit i've never had a mega horsepowered machine with an automatic, but using a tranny cooler or deep colling pan like the derale one, and changing tranny fluid, i've never had a problem

....ummm, I've been running what ever is off the side of my old man's utility truck(regular Dexron III) for years in several high HP cars, including his T400 in his blown drag car. Just don't run synthetics. I've seen to many slipping trans caused by synthetic fluid.
- "brand X" (whatever brand you prefer) Dexron/Mercon III

I have run Amsoil ATF in my 1994 1/2 ton Chev pickup transmission since new and it's 195K miles with no problems at all. About 1/2 of these miles were pulling a ~6000lb trailier as a company vehicle so you know it was not babied. Have changed the fluid and filter only two times....
However, normal ATF is probably fine as long as you change it relatively often.
I believe there are some merits to synthetic ATF. For one, Allison transmission does not allow one to get extended warranty on many models of transmission unless you put in synthetic fluid. I's sure think if synthetic caused problems it's not what they'd require for extended warranty.
