Clutch pedal/linkage bushing

Just some info.

For those of you, who like me, could not find the little plastic bushing that holds the hydraulic clutch push-rod to the pedal.

I found the part in a package at the auto part store, the ones with the big "HELP!" written on the top, made by Motormite. Part # 14041. comes with the clip and a few other parts, costs like 5 bux. I assume its the same clip for all the years.

Re: Clutch pedal/linkage bushing

I found the original part# for that bushing/clip in my GM parts book, and gmpartsdirect actually still has them. It's listed in their alternate catalog under the original part#, which is 14091384, and it lists for $4.17. Just thought I'd add this to the post since there's so many posts where it's broken and people can't locate a replacement.

Re: Clutch pedal/linkage bushing

Nice find. The only time I could find a new bushing was when I bought a new master/slave cylinder setup !

Re: Clutch pedal/linkage bushing

hmmm forgot about this thread. I also got the bushing from gm. the issue i found was even though we went through the exploded diagrams of the pedal assembly and hand selected the part numbers, all the parts were wrong, the bushing fit in the pushrod, and onto the pin of the clutch pedal, but then there is a metal retaining clip that is supposed to then snap over the end of the stud and into the groove to hold things together. I found that with the plastic bushing, there is no more room on the stud for the retainer clip . Is there more than one setup? I currently have one of the bushings, cut apart to that it basically just lines the inside of the pushrod and a "E" clip holding everything together, and thats a tight fit. Its been holding up fine, but im just a little confused. Everywhere i looked i say the two pieces, yet they dont seem to work together.

Yeah, in my illustrated parts book, it shows there being two pieces as well. That's definitely a misnomer on the 3rd gens since the plastic bushing is just a snap fit with the clutch pedal pin. I also have a clutch master cylinder I grabbed out of a 4th gen, and it uses a hard rubber bushing with a brake pedal type linkage clip like Jproz mentioned. The 4th gen style definitely seems to be more durable. The nice thing is that the 3rd gen pedal pin already has a groove in it for the 4th gen linkage clip to fit on. So if breaking that brittle plastic 3rd gen bushing/clip becomes a repetitive thing on your car, I'd highly suggest getting a 4th gen master cylinder and pin clip. You might even be able to just pop the bushing out of a 4th gen m/c rod and put it in the 3rd gen m/c rod, and upgrade it that way as well. My setup has the 4th gen m/c, the LT1 style braided stainless line, and one of the nice aluminum 3rd gen slave cylinders. Doesn't get much better than that. Here's a link to the thread I posted with pics of that setup. You can see the different 4th gen style bushing in the first pic. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...te#post3175320

Re: Clutch pedal/linkage bushing

hey pat, that setup is actually exactly what i have now, my master has the braided line, i actually think it is a 4th gen unit, and i also have the aluminum slave that i bought from nelapse while i was doing my 5 speed swap, its good stuff. My master cylinder did not come with any bushing, so that why im using the other clip.

Re: Clutch pedal/linkage bushing

I pulled the m/c from a 94 V6 Firebird at the junkyard, and that was the bushing that was in there from the factory I guess. Did you buy your m/c as a new replacement? If so, maybe they just expect you to re-use your original one?

cross-reference this thread for info on the bushing that connects the clutch pedal and the clutch cylinder rod:

Re: Clutch pedal/linkage bushing

If I remember correctly, if it's like the original bushing, it just snaps into the hole. Has like 3 tangs if I remember right. Hey I just found another message thread that has some really good pics of the bushing. It is how I remember it, with 3 tangs the help it snap in place in the rod. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...re-1988-a.html

Re: Clutch pedal/linkage bushing

the ones you get in the auto parts store package dont have the small lines sticking out that lock in the groove cut in the shaft look carefully those lines sticking out go in the groves on the shaft, can't find the things anywhere!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Clutch pedal/linkage bushing

Looks like Rat's suggestion is probably your best bet. The only other options would be to see if you could possibly buy an original one in useable shape from someone here on the forums or fab up your own bushing somehow. But yeah, if I was in your position I'd probably just buy 2 or 3 new ones from GM Direct. That'd be the easiest/most painless way!

Re: Clutch pedal/linkage bushing

For all you gentlemen who are struggling with this stupid plastic bushing self-disassembling on you, it happened to me in rush hour... wow was I PISSED.
Anyhow got it towed home because the cops were there. Simple fix. Napa automatic transmission bushing kit 615-1422 Take the white bushing and cut the damn retainers off, use a mill file and file it down to fit flush in the master cyl rod end. Then buy a clip P/N 3817880 from local GM dealer and put one of these damn things on there. SCREW that plastic piece of JUNK. Fixed forever.
