Re: Best aluminum water pump
i really like the eldebrock i put on mine back in '98
OEM quality, special oversized impeller, made in usa
Bought to replace the original with a leaking seal,
the extra flow of the eldebrock made no noticable
difference in cooling in my case, but can't hurt

Re: Best aluminum water pump
So is the aluminum pump the way to go? or is it a waste of money over a rebuild?

Re: Best aluminum water pump
the thing i don't like about most rebuilds is the hubs
often have runout-they can wobble a bit,the cause is
the shaft is hardened because the ***** in the bearing
run directly on it,while the hub is softer mild steel,
making it difficult to get the hub pressed on straight.
Some rebuilders will use a special machine to grind
the face of the hub true.
Considering a quality aluminum water pump will likely
last 15yrs or more,i'd say it's worth it

Re: Best aluminum water pump
I didnt say you couldnt use it as a core, if they want to give you some cash for your junk pump then great! But with the exception of electric pumps and mebe some high end race pumps you just dont send your old piece in to be rebuilt. That might happen for odd ball motors but for any SBC theres no such service. Buy a good pump and if it goes out in your life time buy another one. If they offer a life time warranty then even better.
I would also not buy a reman either.

I had a stewart components stage II. Had it rebuilt twice at $70 a pop. Still leaked. I'm running a Edelbrock now, no problems yet.

Re: Best aluminum water pump
Be skeptic on Summit parts. Although I believe their water pumps are Weiand brand, which is good that I know of.
I have a #23123 Stewart Stage 2. I will run a leak test before installing. This pump looks great though, lighter than stock, 30% higher flow and to the guy who said his pump leaked, did you match it with a Stewart Stage 2 thermostat, may this have put stress on the pump with a none bypassed stat being used? (Obviously not the problem if you used their matching stat). Let me know this...as Stewart recommends it due to the higher flow, may have blown something out using a none bypassed stat resulting in a leak, then the rebuild on top of that probably didn't help. Just curious

Oh okay. Well I'll be sure to get a leak test before installing. Thanks for the review.

Re: Best aluminum water pump
Mine may have been a one out. I may have just gotten a bad pump. I'm sure others are running stewart pumps with no problems.

Re: Best aluminum water pump
I just order my Edelbrock water pump $171.90 total... ouch Summit

Re: Best aluminum water pump
If you order a quality pump and keep your coolant in good shape the pump will last tens of thousands of miles, I wouldnt waste my time getting a conventional cast pump rebuilt and I would avoid rebuilt pumps also. If I have to drop another $170 ish after 100,000-150,000 miles then I will.
IMO it's like getting your performance tires re-capped cause you dont want to spend another $500-$1000 every 50,000 miles, you could proabably do it but dose it seem all that smart?

Re: Best aluminum water pump
ive had a rebuild stocker i think with 10% more flow that i got 4 yrs ago. 36,000 miles and 2 engines and its still running great. its nothing special, local guy i get parts from got it for me, was pretty cheap and it cools my 383 in hot 100degree weather just fine with a stock rad
i do have to say it weighs a ton tho. if i were to get a aluminum one it would be purely for weight reduction.

Re: Best aluminum water pump
I think Steward is by far the best if cooling performance is an issue. Stewards have the larger and better quality bearings, the better impeller, and are flow balanced for left & right banks.
If it's just for weight reduction, then about any brand should be fine.
I've had one Edelbrock and a Moroso I think with no problems from either.
Rebuilding is a relatively simple task.

Re: Best aluminum water pump
I don't remember the brand name, but there is/was a company that was supposed to have a much better quality pump. similiar to the comment of the Steward's pump. Supposed to have a improved impeller that was supposed to make a huge difference, but it has been many years since I have read about it.
