Security Systems?

Well, summer is coming and im already sick of playing musical t-tops. Time to find a good security system. I want one that I am going to be able to install myself, I dont trust any shops with my car, well very few and none of them to alarms.

What does everyone trust to keep their car safe?

Im looking for something with a proximity sensor and remote start

Musical T-tops? lol

Well, Check at your local stores, Walmart has some cheap systems if you don't wish to spend that much money. Amazon would be another place to look for decent priced ones. If you have cash to burn and want something decent check Viper.

Any reason for a Security system? I mean for me who would want to break into a car for a stock radio? Even more when I put a kill switch on it.

Re: Security Systems?

I have the Python (460 hp) alarm system. It is made by Directed Electronics Inc. Thats the same company that makes the Viper systems. I had it installed by a shop and am very happy with the system so far. It did not come with the proximity alarm .( it can be added to the system ) It is car motion and impact sensitive system that kills the starter while throwing out a nice loud siren. Having the door locks being controlled by the key fob is really a nice touch. It has a few other functions but I never use them .(Panic button, valet switch, etc. )I also have the VATS system wired to a kill switch if I think I need it.(I ran a VATS bypass . It no longer runs through the column.) My CD/Stereo came with a detachable face .When you take it off there's a flashing red LED were the face was. So the first thing they see are two flashing LEDs one where the stereo should be and the other one that the system came with. I had it had mounted just below the shifter plate in front of the glove box. There is also the 3 Python security stickers . Here's a link to Viper =

Re: Security Systems?

Definitely go with something from Directed Electronics. I got a Viper 5900 remote start/alarm for my Tahoe. Has a 2mile range on it.

I'll most likely be getting an alarm for my Camaro too, probably not remote start though. I plan on going with another DE made system.

Re: Security Systems?

If you are thinking of a ALARM SYSTEM, I would have a good Security Shop do the install. Too many things to go wrong with the electrical and if you have a VATS system more so. I have had DEI Viper system since 1989 and last year updated to newer Viper system (HV-350) and pleased with the updates.

Re: Security Systems?

If you did the VATS bypass then it could be that the resistance values are off a little/or gust really close causing it to be intermittent and not starting. When I first started having intermittent starting issues I would have to let the car set in between start attempts for about 5 min. to let the VATS system reset itself. I fixed the problem by testing the key resistance and then set a "adjustable resistance cube" to the exact value I needed instead of using the traditional resistance diodes. If its your alarm system acting up than I feel for you. I have never tried to install a system myself so a shop would be the way "I" would go.They probably want to take out your alarm and install one of their own .( under warranty ) By the way I also had a problem with a starter relay located in the compartment next to your left foot while in the car. The little clips that held it together were gone and it had worked itself apart somehow and was just barely making contact causing starting problems. Put a zip tie on it and fixed it. I found that thanks to this site.

Re: Security Systems?

for what its worth ive always used compustar alarms theyre kinda spendy but i just love em most systems they have are pageback alarms and they have all types of cool features they even have one that pages you no matter where u are the remote will tell u whats happening with ur car if the alarm is set off... i have a buddy who actually tested this feature he has it on his 2002 impala and he remote started his car from japan while i was on the phone with him and then i set his alarm off and he actually disarmed it it was pretty bad *** it was delayed by a little bit but still.... btw we live in minnesota

Re: Security Systems?

can anyone tell me where the actual VATS module is located in my 89 camaro rs? ive tried a million things the get this car to start but it wont bc the injectors wont fire. got it down to the VATS module not sending an enable fuel signal and i need to replace the module so help would be great thank you. i cant just do a simple bypass with a resistor bc the module itself is the problem

Re: Security Systems?

I have an Omega Crime Guard. Its OK but to be honest Im not in love with it. One thing is that if the battery drains, the thing goes off. I guess in case someone steals your battery but I'd like the option to not have that and thats one thing I cant change. Then it defaults to locking all the doors automatically if your 9volt goes dead. So get your car serviced if the 9volt is dead and your keys get locked in. Brilliant.

This simple Clifford looks good enough for me I may have to upgrade

Re: Security Systems?

I have been installing alarms for over 12 years now and I prefer Compustar alarms sytems. I have also used DEI products and have good things to say about them also. The proximity sensor would be DEI part # 508D, along with a two way alarm from DEI or compustar should suffice for your needs. Most companies will not sell you an alarm over the counter due to contracts with the manufacturers ( liability issues, I guess) but you can get anything over the internet these days. If you do end up deciding on a compustar, I am a dealer for them and I can get you one that will have a lifetime warranty on the brain unit ( internet units have NO warranty)

Check under the dash to see if the thick yellow wire was cut and a relay installed. if it was, remove the relay and crimp/solder the two ends of the yellow wire back together, that should get your car running again.
