Canton Oil pan- do you have to use their pickup?

Anybody with a Canton pan- I need your input. I purchased a Canton oil pan to go on the Z this winter. I purchased 13-080M. They state on their website that it 'requires' use of their pickup.

Do you have to use their pickup, or will any pickup work so long as I get one for the correct depth of the pan?

Use their pickup. Oil flow is not something to be toyed with... they are cheap enough.

Re: Canton Oil pan- do you have to use their pickup?

$40 is cheaper than an engine rebuild

I've got their pan and pickup. While I was there, I put on a new oil pump and drive shaft. Even if it didn't require a Canton pickup, a new one was going on there as a 'while I was there' (just like the reason for the new oil pump). Looking at it that way, the Canton pickup is only $30 more than a stock one.

Re: Canton Oil pan- do you have to use their pickup?

When I contacted Canton about the oil pump I want to use (not listed on their site as a pickup option- #10554 Std Volume/Pressure 3/4 inlet), I was directed to Melling, and they had a pickup they recommended. Thought if I could kill 2 birds with one stone, might as well.

This pump? That says it std vol / high pressure 3/4".

I'm not that much into drag racing, so take this FWIW. At the automotive machine shop I worked at, IIRC we recommended the high volume / std pressure for mild performance builds. High pressure pumps were viewed as more of a bandaid for an engine with low oil pressure.

Re: Canton Oil pan- do you have to use their pickup?

There's must be high pressure....when I picked it out on summit, this is what I saw for specs:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MEL-10554/

I guess I could order from them and use the lower pressure spring. I don't want HV or high pressure, and don't want to use the M55 or M55 based pumps due to the weaker castings. It's a street car at the end of the day that might see some occasional drag or (if the wifey doesn't object too much) road race time.

No. I asked Canton this very question when I purchased my Canton oil pan. The answer was no. I have since had my motor up to 6800 rpm with no oil pressure issues.

Re: Canton Oil pan- do you have to use their pickup?

Had to use the canton pick-up with my street/strip pan 15-010, stock circular pick-up wouldn't fit it hit the baffle wall/trap door. I went with the stock 4qrt, but the picture of your 5qrt on summit looks like the baffle wall/trap door is about the same location. So I'm gusing rectangle pickup and one intended for 5qrt depth. Plus canton pick-ups bolts on the pump housing. Save yourself the 2nd shipping cost.

Re: Canton Oil pan- do you have to use their pickup?

I wouldnt say you have too but I recomend using the manufacturers pickup. As far as oil pump. People will tell you a high volume pump will suck your pan dry and rob you horsepower. I run a HV on my car and have been for 5 years and have had no problems. Every engine build I ever did I put high volume never had any problems. I have never used a standard volume high pressure pump though. I do know the high volume pumps I get are normally Melling and I normally get between 65-80 psi.

Re: Canton Oil pan- do you have to use their pickup?

I used their pickups on both my canton pans because I couldnt find one for the 3/4" pump i was using that would clear the baffles in the tank.

I ran the road race pan in my 383 and the drag race pan for my 401. What pisses me off is that I used 2 diferent melling pumps but both 3/4" pickups. The two pans are different, and have different part numbers for the pickup for a 3/4" pumps... I ordered the new pickup and find its exactly the same as the one I already had for the one melling pump!!

I think I ran the M55 pump on the 383 and then went to the 10555 pump for the 401 due to a scare with the castings.
I have heard from some guys that Melling changed their ways and went back to a much beefier casting...if concerned just get the higher cost Melling race pumps...believe they all start with a 10xxx

Re: Canton Oil pan- do you have to use their pickup?

On my big block chysler I took apart the pump and smoothed out allt he casting because my previous pump had a small piece of casting break off and stop the pump impeller. that sucked.

Re: Canton Oil pan- do you have to use their pickup?

Im running their road race pan/ pickup for a 400 block, the beefier casting melling oil pump with standard psi, volume and a 3/4 inlet.
I have the composite comp cams dizzy gear 4 my solid roller cam is y im running a standard psi and volume oil pump, oil psi is just fine at 8,000 rpm.

Re: Canton Oil pan- do you have to use their pickup?

I bought both the road race pan and pick up and mated it to my melting shark tooth pump and still had to modify the bracket off of the pick up because there was little to nill clearance between pump and pan. I think it is true that the casting is taller in my case because the pump it especially bigger.
