Tach problems
I have an 89 RS. I've switched out the entire cluster and had the same problem. my fuel wasn't reading either. I put in a new fuel sending unit and the fuel reads correctly now. Still having problem with Tach. the needle just swings around and stays at the end. Is there anyone who has had similar trouble or can narrow down causes of this?

Re: Tach problems
Try this , take face plate and lens cover off cluster and with ign key in off position rotate tack needle by hand to zero then turn key on and see if it stays at zero, if it does then start car and see if it operates as it should.
I had this happen once after leaveing ign key on and draining battery dead when i installed new battery tac would jump to highest reading, after doing what i decribed i found if tac needle was placed over approx half way on scale needle would jump to highest reading when key is turned on, if needle was placed approx under half way on scale by hand with key off needle would drop to zero and worked correctly when key was turned on.
This worked for my car but i caught it right away,i would think there is a possibility if tac is left with needle being maxed out and car is driven it could fry your tac as it is trying to make a complete revolution to return to zero side of scale.

Re: Tach problems
I have done that to mine. Still swings to max reading. I had the car's wiring checked and was told everything was good.

Re: Tach problems
I also have an 89 RS, and I once had the same problem as cmc. My battery was low, and when I went to start the car, the starter just clicked due to the low battery and it pegged the tach. I was gonna pull off the cluster face plate and rotate the needle back to zero by hand, but I drove the car the next day, and the tach ended up correcting itself. Got lucky I guess. If you can't get yours to stop pegging, just get another tach from the junkyard or ebay. There's probably nothing wrong with your car's wiring. More than likely the tach is just shot if you can't get it to stop pegging every time.
