MSD Tech..........

Can the adjusatble timing control (part #8683) be used without an MSD ignition control (ie 6A)? I have an Accel 300+ and i'd like to get the timing control. I should have bought an MSD box, my Accel box sounds like some sort of demented clock. Thanks

Did you get part #8683 or the other one?

Well, I just received an answer to the e-mail I sent to MSD. Here's what it said...........

Dear Sir;

The 8683 cannot be used with an MSD ignition. It's made to be used with the stock setup.

Thank You,
MSD Tech

I'm not sure if this good news or bad news. Does anyone know if I can use this with my Accel box?

THAT MAKES NO F U C K I N G sense....LMFAO...OMG dude!! I called MSD tech today b/c of the reasons I will list below!! They asked me if I sent them an e-mail about this topic LOL>>>I guess they were referring to you man LOL...I gotta say...the dude on the phone was an ***-wipe!! He's eating his fricking dinner chewing in my g o d damn face!! I mean...what the heck is that crap!!!!! here is what I just posted on my local f-body club's message board...I AM SICK OF THIS CRAP !!!

SO i ditched class today (only one) at about noon and decided to go to my shop and do my MSD installs. Well, I got the 6AL in and it is sweet. I got the blaster GM coil w/ harness and hooked it up....SWEET! I get to the timing computer and start the install (this is the *hard* one to do).....well, turns out Jegs and Summit REALLY ****ed up BADLY along w/ MSD. They are advertising there...

**APPARENTLY**

"The MSD Adjustable Timing Control puts you in control of your ignition timing - from the drivers's seat! A dash mounted control **** allows you to adjust the ignition timing to compensate for changes in altitude, low octane gas, or heavy loads. For cars driven every day but raced occasionally on the weekends, this control is perfect. Increased fuel mileage and performance are just some of the benefits as the ignition timing can be advanced or retarded to prevent engine detonation. The control **** mounts to the dash board for easy and accurate timing adjustments up to 15°. The Control can be used on 4, 6 and 8-cylinder engines and must be used with a MSD Ignition Control.

GM HEI WITHOUT COMPUTER/FORD TFI IGNITION EQUIPPED VEHICLES
For vehicles equipped with the conventional GM HEI distributor (with vacuum advance), large cap HEI with vacuum advance or a Ford TFI Ignition, the #121-8682 Adjustable Timing Control is the correct model. Special terminals are supplied, which permit this unit to be connedcted directly to the existing distributor wires. This simple and clean installation will require less than twenty minutes to perform!"

ok...so I DO NOT have the "large cap" NOR the internal coil...so pt# 8682 is NOT for me

I DO have the "small" cap and "external" dual connect coil....so pt# 8683 SHOULD be for me right??.....WRONG!!!! (according to MSD tech :/ ) I'm like WTF!!...LOOK IT SAYS RIGHT HERE!! "121-8683 Adj Timing Control, GM HEI with External Coil | View Product $ 110." Well ****!! thats my application isnt it....they say no...so I ask WTF is my application then...the guy tells me "121-8680 Adjustable Timing Control $ 92.99 " because I ALREADY am running the 6AL box so i need the "MSD" to "MSD" adj. computer....well ****, thats not what jegs NOR summit NOR MSD told me on the phone...this is ****ed up...im not too happy about the situation. Even the MSD catalog says to run this timing comp. "with my 6AL box and GM HEI"...so, whats the story man....****! ohh well, life goes on. BTW: I still think I have THE RIGHT one....the reason why I called is b/c some of the wires were NOT the same color to the harness the plug into. Black to ground..OK White to yellow...OK. Red to red...OK, so now I had left over a orange wire, violet wire, and light green wire...well **** I only had a WHITE harness left and as you know...ALL those colors can go to white...LOL, **** I wasnt about to plug and chug and see what blows up first....weird ...very weird...I'm stumped...

Check out Jacobs Electronics, www.jacobselectronics.com I believe, but they have an adjustable timing setup as well and I THINK that it's universal.

The unit will not work with the MSD box, it is an ignition with in itself and it will create problems when trying to trigger an after market box. I have been out for a few days and someone else is taking care of the e-mails sorry for the vague answer previously.

Sorry for the "shabby" help you received when you called. No one should be eating or drinking while speaking with a customer on the phone. By any chance do you have the name of the tech that you spoke with? If you do let me know so I can handle that situation. Again I do apologize for this. If you are going to use any aftermarket ignition box, you will need to use the MSD part number 8680. We do not show anyplace in our catalog that the 8683 is for use with an MSD box, I do not know what it says in the summit or jegs catalog. As far as asking if you e-mailed a question, I recognize a lot of questions when people write and then call, as does the other guys that help do the e-mail. There is no sense in answering an e-mail if we have already answered the question on the phone. You have the information via the phone call no sense in telling you the same thing on an e-mail. So when we do recognize a call and e-mail we do ask. If you remember who you spoke with let me know and I will get it handled.

Thanks,

Joe
