1982-1992 Parts and Illustration Catalog...
I just got my 1982-1992 Chevrolet F-body Parts And Illustration Catalog yesterday. I didn't know these things existed (at least for the public) until someone mentioned them in a post. I called up Dal @ VanDevere Olds and he knew what I was talking about and they are still available.
This thing is great, thicker than my Helm shop manual or a phone book (I had to get a 4" binder to put it in). It has tons of exploded-view illustrations with all of the GM part numbers. I guess this is what dealers used to order parts before they went to microfische or computer databases. I would've got this a long time ago had I known that I could get one. Just skimming through it last night I made a few interesting discoveries:
- It shows different part numbers for TBI heads and TPI heads
- It shows ZO3 as the required RPO code to get the "25th Anniversary" emblem on the rear hatch
- I shows 2 different set of TPI runners available in '92, dull and shiny
Anyways, this might all be common knowledge, I know it has all been discussed recently. If anything the catolog is another source of information and for a measly $30 delivered you can't go wrong. At least I'll be able to look up part numbers on my own now.
BTW - there isn't a part number for the catalog itself, at least there wasn't one on the receipt. When I called to order it, he knew what it was already. It is in 2 sections, a white section and a green section.

Yep, I agree, they're a huge source of interesting information. I figured out a way to get rid of the heater bypass valve to clean up the engine compartment some and get rid of possible coolant leaks. I'll change the heater outlet tube that runs along the right-side sub-frame rail when I pull my 305 out in a couple months and replace it with the tube that's for the non-A/C cars (RPO code C41). This tube doesn't have the Tee in it, and the hose coming out of the throttle body (or intake if the TB has been bypassed) will go straight to the heater core instead of the bypass valve first. This bypass valve only operates (diverts the coolant back to the radiator instead of going to the heater core) when the HVAC temp selector is on full cold, otherwise it does nothing.
Anyways, these books have been a big help for me and others in figuring out parts and part numbers I (and others) have needed for certain things like the 1LE brakes and such. The other night, I was actually showing my wife the exploded view of the engine to show her what needs to be replaced when it's rebuilt, how much the machine shop needs to do, and what parts I can replace at home on the engine stand.

How do you get one? Is it a dealerhip only item? How much do they run?

Call up Dal Slabaugh at Van Devere Olds (1-800-362-9494) and ask for them. As Dana mentioned, they're about $30 and Dal knows which manuals these are.

I just called Sal and ordered one up.
He also mentioned that they offer a discounted price on parts to all the car clubs (internet and otherwise), and Thirdgen is considered one. Anybody know if his prices are as good as (or better) than partszoneonline or gmpart.com?

Dal's prices seem to be inline with the other discount places, maybe just a little bit more. His shipping prices seem to be good though. I've checked his prices on a few items with the other places (gmpartsdirect, partszoneonline) and sometimes he may be like a buck or two more, but he's always been really helpful and was able to figure out what I needed just from my descriptions. Besides, Dal's prices are way lower than any of the local dealers so it's good enough for me. Gmpartsdirect (I think) has the cheapest prices I've ever seen but their shipping charges are really high so it kinda evens it all out.
