help with HSR
ok i have had my hsr for about 6 months now and has been running fine. i just had to pull the heads for a new head gasket and after i got it all back together the way it was suppose to (torqued with sequence). started it up, drove it around and the oil pressure was reading really high (like 45 psi) so i drained the oil and there was coolant in the oil! so by this time i was pretty mad so i came back the next day and checked my plugs and all but #6 had white stuff on them from the coolant. so i pulled my heads AGAIN and the head gasket was not blown and the pistons were pretty normal except for them being a little more blackish than the first time. so i didn't see a blown head gasket so i started thinking intake gasket. went and got new gaskets (felpro 93317 i was using the same one before so i know they are the right ones) put the intake back on and everything else. started her up and drove her around again and the oil pressure was really high again and so i drained the oil and like i thought it was mixed again. now i am getting pretty mad and about to go pull an other 350 out of the junkyard. do you think it could be my block, heads cracked? wouldn't you see it on the top of the pistons if that was the case? could it be the intake manifold? any help would be appreciated

I'm not good at diagnosing problems, but why did you need a new head gasket in the first place? Maybe thats your clue to finding out why you have coolant in the oil.

1. why were you changing the Head gasket in the first place? Just noticed it was already asked. Your engine does not run fine with a bad head gasket.
2. Is there a puddle of coolant on your lifters or in your lifter valley?
2. HSR requires felpro 1205 gasket.
3. What kind of sealant did you use? I like brown permatex as recommended by holley.
4. Did you allow it 24+ hours to cure?
5. Did you put sealant on the rubber seal side of the gasket?
6. Any history of this or other engine damage?
I do not imagine your heads have anything to do with this unless it's over-heating or losing compression. Suspect your intake, this happened to me during build up. I recommemend flushing the oil. Drain it again, fill it up, prime the oil pump with a impact and a long extension and change the oil one last time. The cloudy oil will linger unless you do this. Certainly do not toss that motor, you'd be amazed how much abuse these motors can take. I know it sucks bad but don't get frustrated. Also might want to check if there is oil in your coolant, this may be just as damaging.

1) alright well its a long story about the head gasket but i had to put a new one on the first time becuase i took the heads off to get some work done.
2) i will be checking that as soon as i get the intake off.
3) i was using a different gasket that did work before but now i have the 1205 gasket and will be puting that on.
4) i have been using permatex ultra black high temp rtv. i will be changing to something else to see if it helps at all becuase every time i have used that on the intake it hasn't worked
5) Yes
6) no there hasn't been any history of engine problems i have only owned the car for 5 months but i knew the person that owned it before quite well and the only things he had to do was brakes, alternator, starter, and a new steering column becuase some jackass tried to steal it from in front of his house.
Thanks for everything and i will be trying all the different things today to see if i can get it to work properly.

I did the exact same thing you did. I used the black high temp permatex as well and it leaked like a b***h I was so pissed off. I decided to use a different sealant-- brown permatex "gasketmaker" and it works like a charm. I also learned to only put sealant on the head-side of the 1205, the intake side has it's own blue seals around the ports and putting sealant on it will damage that seal. Also, check that oil often to make sure it looks clean, water spots or runny oil on the dipstick should be pretty obvious. If anything else pops up be sure to post. Good luck!

thanks man i was also thinking that same thing becuase it has only leaked when i have used the black stuff. i am going to put the brown on and try it out. one more question though, the heads have the water ports on the rear and the intake doesn't, the gaskets i have been using recently have the rear ports blocked off and the 1205 doesn't. is that ok? i'm sure it will be ok because alot of other people here are running it. thanks for all your help

the HSR has the rear water passage blocked? I'm not certain but I think the HSR had them open and the stock intake had them blocked. Either way, as long as the gasket is sealed properly, use the proper torque and sequence you should be fine. I looked at the sealant I like, it's actually called From-A-Gasket, $3 at Pepboys.

Black high temp RTV sealant is the only thing I use.
The head gaskets are always put on dry, no sealant allowed. Torque the heads down in three stages of torque, torque sequence is from center bolts to outer bolts. This sequence can be found in any good engine book.
Intake gaskets need a smear of silicone sealant around the coolant passages on both sides of the intake gasket.

sometimes coolant willl leak out of the head into the cylinders when you pull the head off. This coolant can leak down pass the rings and get into the oil pan.
