Chroming a HSR

Has anybody successfully triple chrome plated an HSR? All the shops out here in So.Cal say that the lower half will puddle and it will look like crap. Well I stayed with the polished and I think it looks like crap and having to polish all the time to keep it looking good takes way to much time. I need to find a place that will triple chrome plate my HSR and stand behind their work!

There are not that many people using HSR intakes around these parts. That is why I brought it up here.

I'd call one of the high end resto shops and ask who they use.

I don't understand, it's electoplating. So how can it puddle???

I think you missed it. at car shows there is a lot of guys running tunnel ram intakes that are custom chromed. look for the old vette cars and the 57 chevy guys. chances are you will see blowers sticking out the hoods or tunnel rams all chromed out.( it's so common it's not even funny) just like going down the camaro area and knowing befor you see it there will be rows after rows of 68 and 69 camaros

That's a good question! I didn't understand it myself, but every place I went to (total of 5) they said no they would not do it because of the valleys the intake has, and it would cause a puddling problem. So with that said nobody wanted to stand by their work.

I was kinda hoping sombody here had chromed their HSR with some sucess.

I think rhinton on steathram.com had his ceramic coated or something. Might want to ask him.

That stuff looks good. Did you have to polish everything before coating them?

I had my HSR powder coated (almost chrome:color)... the smoother the better.... follow the link pic, towards the bottom of the site in my present setup. useing the powder coated HSR... it matches all my polished goodies and i don't have to maintain the intake....(so much better then getting inbetween the injectors and rails...etc,etc)

not on the intake.... it won't oxidize...

all though if it gets stained i just run some blue chrome polish over it and the stains come right off....

I'm looking for a shine that will require sunglasses or even a welders mask. I have been to countless sites with this topic and nobody has produced a chromed HSR. I guess it really is a 'white unicorn'.

I can Chrome plate one but your notlooking at a cheap item to chrome....

Your best bet would be Polish the base. or powdercoat it say the color or your car or block. and chrome plate the Plenum. Then do the lower lines the same color as the base also.

feel free to e-mail me if you like.

The unit is already polished. I hate having to do maintenece on it to keep it looking good. It's easier to just wash the motor with soap and water, dry it and use a little glass cleaner. Sparkles like a diamond in a goats A*S!

If its polished already id tell you to ZOOP SEAL or clear powder coat it.

Chroming the Plenum will turn out awesome. the base is hit or miss. You will get some "miss chrome" or " nickle shadows" down in the little nooks and vallies on intakes.

Chris, how much luster or shine wil be lost if you put a clear powdercoat on the intake? Im sure some shine has to be lost. This is something that I thought about doing someday. I do NOT want the maintainance of a polished intake and plenum. I cant stand doing my valve covers all the time. For me, polish is out and powdercoat is in

Do you have any sample pics of "miss chrome" or "nickle shadows" I'd really like to get an understanding of what every shop has told me time and time again.

Clear over a Polished part you don't really loose luster. I put clear over a TON of stainless car parts once they are rebuffed buy a guy I know. I use a Glossy clear so you actually get a nice clear finish. not a yellowish clear. I do tons of polished brass also. So it doesnt tarnish.

I'll have to look for some pic's and post em.

1 DwnCam,

Im planing to chroming a stock or aftermarket TPI intake so I can show people what Im talking about and let them judge if they want one done or not. Again I'll look around to see if I have any sample parts I keep around the shop with any miss chrome. There are parts that get it no matter what.
