hsr question
Hi just finished installing a staelth ram on a 383 in an 88 formula. I also had a chip burned by pcms for less. Upon initial startup till the engine is warm it will not idle. Once warm idels fine a little lhigh but fine (900 rpm). I had them modify (in the chip) for not using the ninth injector and not using the egr. Fuel pressure is at 40. You have to constanly rev it to keep it running but it does usually stall a few times. Any ideas?

Sounds like you need to acquire the eqpt to do your own chip tuning, and learn how to use it. Or, an aftermarket ECM, that allows you to tune it from a laptop screen.
There's NO WAY you'll ever get it right using the chips-by-mail deal. Probably not ever even close.

Plus, how did you manage to get the HSR under that Formula's hood? Or haven't put the hood back on yet? LOL

chip tune
Hey I have the HSR put on a 350, and struggled with the no idle till warm problem. I am able to make my own chips, but the biggest thing that helped me was making sure the TPS was at ~.54 volts, and adjusting the IAC valve to the proper depth. These two things made the most improvement on my "cold" starts. If you get the equipment to burn your own chips I can send you my HSR tune and you can try it out, at least it would give you a place to start.

Interesting about the .54 volts. I was find tuning my TPS voltage thinking I would up it to around .60 volts and this was with the engine running. When I hit the .54 Volt mark the idle was noticeably smoother. When I went higher things were not quite as smooth. Dropped it back down to the .54 volt mark and left it at that. Kind of like the sweet spot for my combination.

Thanks I'll look at those. I had to trim the hood brace to close the hood. The car runs great once warmed up its just the cold idle that sucks. So without getting killed here what all would i need to get to be able to burn my own chips? Is there a thread here that lists this stuff cause this is all very new to me.

Sure is! Go over to the DIY Prom forum and start reading the stickies. Then read them again. And again. Did I say to read them again? LOL

I'm curious what size injectors you're using. 40PSI may be a bit low for fuel pressure. Do you know anyone with a wideband oxygen sensor, that'd help you figure out what's happening.

No I don't but we did try uping the fuel pressure to 55 but the regulator that came with the hsr doesn't seem to like to keep it there so I think I'll have to get another.

I believe there has been a lot of complaints about the FPR for the HSR... I couldn't tell ya cuz I couldn't get my gage to properly work with their cheap shraeder valve- For troubleshooting's sakes I replaced it with a stock Grand National one.

So is the stock grand national one adjustable? By the way currently I am running stock injectors sorry forgot to say that before.

As far as I know all stock FPR's are set at 3 bar or about 44PSI. The Grand Nationals share the same pressure regulator design so I bought the stocker and adjusted fuel through the PROM. Another option would be to buy an adjustable one made for Grand Nationals instead of running the risk of using another Holley.

You need some sort of scanner to see what the ecm is seeing when the car is running. Without data, you are flying blind, even by using a mail-order chip. If you have data to send to the chip burner, then you can get a way more accurate chip.
It sounds like it is running lean at idle, but without any data, nobody knows what's really happening.

FYI, the GN regulator is non adjustable and is set at 36 psi IIRC.
The adjustable Kirban unit is really the way to go.
