Why isn't this intake listed as Vortec alternative?

This is what the magnificant big brown truck left on my door step today. This looks better in person than it did in the pictures on ebay. I have never seen anything like it, and I can't wait to see how it does with my big bump stick and solid rollers. Good thing I put a six speed in, cause I have a feeling I am going to be having alot of fun upstairs

I am not sure how rare it is, but I have never seen one like it. According to the seller the part number is 9901-111. I have not been able to find anything online about it. Any info would be much appreciated

Wow!, That one has all kinds of things going on with it. I wonder if that throttle bracket is standard issue, seems to be similar to the one I have. Mine did not come with any brass pipes sticking out of it either. I also would of never guessed that the throttle linkage was a stock piece. The blue anodized bit looked like a retrofit to me.

You know if you do not find anymore info on that intake I will be forced to jump through the screen and hurt you

Seen this before. I believe Holley referred to it as a mono-valve efi intake manifold. A model was available for both late model gen1 sbc and vortecs. I believe it is obsolete.

Thanks for your help guys, if you couldn't tell I am pumped to try this out. Haven't been this jazzed about car stuff in a while. To tell the truth stuff was starting to get a little boring, same part rehashed, if you catch my drift.

TPI383 That picture is a normal single plane conversion. There is a wood spacer under the throttle body and the fuel rails are mounted all cheesy. No offense if it is yours.

alvwie: when you say it is obsolete, I am not sure what you are driving at. I realize they do not mak it anymore. Thats the cool part for me. As far a its effectiveness, it looks as viable as anything else offered today, and from what I can tell people at Holley paid alot more attention to their castings back then, than they do today.

Didn't mean anything good or bad by the obsolete comment. No idea why holley chose to obsolete it. Just simply as I recall it has been quite a while since it has been listed by Holley.

with the brass inserts, it looks like a marine manifold.

Yea from my limited conversation with Holley, it is a marine manifold that was actually produced by a company called Hirel Marine technologies. When Holley bought them out to get into the FI game, they experimented with some of their castings, I guess this is one of them. I doubt anyone else gives me a call, but I will wait and see

Off topic but a strange to see the BB cast into the intake, the same as all SLP runners. So are SLP runners made by Holley or a third party. The same marking on both, I wonder who.

Hopefully the BB doesn't stand for Big Block....

It's actually simple and kewl lookin', hood clearance would probably be an issue since it would have to go on top of the TB. I'll be interested in hearing what you find out and how well it runs for ya!!

I need to measure it. A standard carb air cleaner fits on there. For a rough estimate, I was able to stick my fist in there and I am about 260 lbs of car guy.

I saw that intake for sale on ebay too.. I posted over on chevytalk.com's EFI forum..

http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/sh...hp?tid/150945/

In the end, it's an oddball piece. functional maybe, but odd. I hope the throttle shafts don't leak.

Another big guy, huh? LOL

In that case you'll probably be fine. You can always go with a carb drop base to gain another half inch or so if you need it. The K&N breather lids help, too.

Dave - as an aside - pls let me know when you send that email by sendng a plain one as well if you don't mind. Thanks!

Chevellefan: The throttle shaft has a pretty decent nylon looking seal on each side, I think it should be fine. The intake arrived in its original packing, and from what I can tell has never been assembled to an engine.

Vernw: I just sent that email off. I zipped the files. I am not sure where you are located, but if you can make it to this area I would be happy to work with you and get that machine up on the dyno and tuned.

TPI383: Thanks for the effort on that stuff. At least you had a picture of another one, so I know there are atleast two.

I ordered 300 dollars in fuel supply stuff for this thing, so it should look nice. I purchased the Holley fuel rails, -8AN fittings, The black braided hose, and a Kirban adjustable regulator.

My cam is rated for 6200, My seriously ported TPI only gets me to 5500 5600K and even then the HP curve is starting to turn down. I am hoping to see 6200 with gusto!!!

I just went to the Chevy Talk forum. That is interesting Doug Flynn did not like it (I am assuming that is Mr C950). From looking at other pictures it seems earlier models had a step in the throttle body, I could see how this could cause sticking. This one has been bored and polished straight down, and I have bee messing with it alot and I have not had any binding issues.

As for the height. I compared it to a non-vortec, single plane with a carb. From the top of the mounting flange to the top of each setup, the holley setup is a little over .5 of an inch shorter. I think the fact that the throttle body is one continuous stack gives it kind of an optical illusion effect.

Sounds like you'll probably be fine then. You're probably right about the optical illusion part.

I also got the email - thanks! Will delve into them later tonight or this weekend. Appreciate the offer, too - unfortunatel Dallas, TX is a bit far from Peoria, altho I may be driving up that way in August. Hopefully I can have a pretty close tune by then. Might swing by and shake your hand or run a dyno test anyway, there's always room for improvement, right? LOL

I will post pictures later

I purchased the fuel rails for the Holley vortec stealth ram, and with a tiny bit of tweaking they fit pretty nicely. I started mounting sensors and thats when I noticed a problem.

The intake came with a TPS sensor which mounts up fine, but it is not setup to read a throttle shaft that rotates in a counter clockwise rotation. Does anybody know of a Holley/ Grand Prix style TPS that reads in a CC rotation??? Otherwise I guess i am stuck retrofittting a ford TPS to my intake.

Here is my TPS problem. Notice the direction the throttle opens. The TPS shown reads in the opposite direction. Any ideas on this one would be much appreciated.

What would happen if you swapped +5v and GND wires on the stock TPS?

Well that would work, but the sensor does not physically rotate the other direction. THere are stops in there and it is spring loaded in one direction. Thanks though!

thats very odd that the TPS does not work for you. I think, (but not positive) that the TPS is opposite between a TPI and TBI throttle body. Later model TBI units might be the one you are looking for, or maybe that is what you have.

beyond that though, depending on the linkages and throttle blade, you could probably flip the blade orientation, and flip the linkage 180 degrees, so that it drops down, rather than sticks up, and this will reverse the direction of travel. You will have to reset the throttle blade though, which is a little tricky, as well as re-stake the screws holding it in place. So now, the blade will open with the front edge dropping down, rather than going up. The throttle cable would mount under the bracket, rather than on top. hope that makes sense....

Well it has been a while since I reported on my progress. Things are going well, but slow. Putting on a one off intake and converting to a six speed is a big job to do all at once. anyway here are some pictures of the intake on the engine. I ended up with 3" between the hood and the entrance of the intake. I purchased an ATI bonnet that I am going to use to fab up an intake, but it has not arrived yet. You'll have to excuse the mess I had many wires and hoses hidden and mounted on the old intake so when I took it off, it got messy quickly.

Oh by the way I found the correct TPS sensor at Autozone. It is part number TPS136. I am not sure how to trace that back to a vehicle? My buddy works there and he spent his lunch break just opening TPS sensor boxes until he found what I needed. Gearhead friends are cool. Don't worry I compensated him well, I gave him an old shortblock 350 I had laying around.

Re: Why isn't this intake listed as Vortec alternative?

Nothing since the last update. I did buy a carb hat like the one in that ebay listing. That was interesting to see, thanks TPI383. I noticed that intake was not drilled for vortec heads and it had some machined flats to hold on the carb hat.

It has the pads there just not drilled for the vortec heads.

Re: Why isn't this intake listed as Vortec alternative?

I think that intake is cursed LOL!!! I have managed to have conversations with the last two owners of this intake. They both stated that after picking up the intake their projects stalled and other priorities took over. Well it has been no different for me. I had a kid! Anyway, I finally found some time to get back to work on my car, and I hope to get you guys an update. The trans is finally in the car, but I decided to port the heads and intake, and I am contemplating a single turbo set up.

I imagine it would not be light. There is a good bit of material for the built in throttle body.

Looks like one of the "toilet bowl" intake setup's we used on mechanical fuel injection sprint cars and sand dragsters.

Re: Why isn't this intake listed as Vortec alternative?

It is Finally ALIVE!. It runs pretty good, not as beastly as some projects I have done while trying to finish this one, but it runs and burns out.

Well the wife left me home by myself this weekend. I believe the car is roadable and after some tunning it ain't a bad runner. With the six speed and 3.23 Gears the gearing is a little wierd. Also the six puck race clutch is just that,,,, race. Little more cleaning under the hood and I will be ready for Power Tour as long as she holds together. My Powder Coat guy rocked out on my fabricated parts (Twisted Edge in Peoria, IL). The overflow bracket, Throttle Bracker, and Strut tower brace. He made my work look good.

Here is for all you guys who were freaked about the radio plate missing

Re: Why isn't this intake listed as Vortec alternative?

thats a very nice looking car!
im not a big fan of the piping running to the intake thoguh... something about a plain jane bonnet like that just kinda turns me off.

so how is the throttle response?
i imagine it would take some getting used to
