First time at drag strip with Lingenfelter 383...

Went up to the strip Wednesday night. It was kinda hot, but we had fun anyway. My engine was in a corvette initially, the vette went 12.7. I was amazed when I clicked off a series of mid 12 sec passes at over 113 mph. My best pass was 12.48@113.67. I was shocked, I didnt think the car was that strong. The trap speed is what suprised me most I guess.

Thats pretty damn good for just an engine swap. Ported L98 aluminum heads right.

Re: First time at drag strip with Lingenfelter 383...

I was there that same nite running my 395 stroker. If I remember correctly,
1MEANZ had regular street tires and his 60' times were a bit above 2.0 sec. So figuring that in, his car was really fast. With that trap speed, we are talking about 400 to 410 RWHp. Pretty awesome!

Re: First time at drag strip with Lingenfelter 383...

Well I was suprised to run a 12.62 right off the street. It was in the low 90s that day and still well into the upper 80s during my runs. All my runs were with my subs and amp in the back and with 92 octane fuel. My car is also full weight with working AC and all power accessories. I have Sumitomo 315/35/17 tires at 30psi. My launch technique was simply bring the engine up enough so it wouldnt stall (i only have a 15lb flywheel), let the clutch out as quick as possible, then go WOT. The car wasn't really launching, it was basically just driving to a 2.06-2.08 60ft. ws6gta89 is right, I have to shift the 1-2 by ear because if you wait till you see the shift light, you'll bounce it off the rev limiter which is 700rpm above the shift light.

The engine is to my knowledge just a standard 440hp 480tq Lingenfelter 383. It has ported L98 heads, LPE 219 cam, Superram intake, and 10.5:1 compression. I re-gasketed the engine and mysteriously it has a Callies Forged crank, forged rods, and 1.6 rockers on the intake side which my reserach has shown is not standard LPE fare. This engine was in a 91 corvette with a mild converter, auto trans, and 3.73 gear. That combo was good for 12.7 in the vette. It made 343hp at the rear wheels and the dyno graph shows 520tq at the rear wheels, the torque of which I think is an error (converter flashing maybe?). The only change I made when I put the engine in my car was an upgrade to 30# injectors, and I have Hooker 2210s with true dual 3" exhaust and magnaflow mufflers. (the vette had shorties and dual 2.5s) Neither of these things should have added much if any power. I am running on a mail order LSRacingchips.com tune. I expected the car to go low 13s @ 108-110 in the heat, so needless to say I was shocked. When I first got the engine in and running, I was alarmed at how angry it was. 2nd gear on the stock rims and Kumhos was just plain dangerous on the street so I upgraded to the ZR1 wheels. I get around 20-22mpg back and fourth to work with it. All 4 of my runs had 113mph trap speeds, is this faster than normal for an engine like this? My car isn't exactly a drag car with street tires and 3.23 gears. This thing is supposed to have 440hp at the flywheel and it seems like it has more like 470-500?

Here is a pic of the launch.

Here is doc cutting a 1.7x 60ft. I was diggin his black Z06 wheels.

Re: First time at drag strip with Lingenfelter 383...

Those CNC LPE heads probably flow better than equivelant AFR heads with smaller 2.00 1.56 valves and a 183cc port volume even but they are pretty pricy from Lingenfelter at $1700. How much did you pay for the engine if you dont mind me asking? I was able to dig up some flow numbers on those heads.

.200 140 116
.300 198 157
.400 242 185
.450 249 195
.500 254 199
.550 260 203
.600 263 206

The heads may or may not have been CNC ported. All the recipts say is that they have "killer port&Flow" and a "Race 3 angle valve job", whatever all that means.... you can see in the pic that the heads dont have CNC marks on them. so they were either cnc'd and cleaned up, or just ported by hand to begin with.

I have the recipts for most of the engine. The previous owner supplied the block, crank, and rods, and LPE added and installed everything else. The build cost $7500. I got the engine for $3000 with about 1000 miles or so on it. $3k is not cheap by any means, but I think it is a good deal for what I got. I spent about 1k on headers, flywheel, and extras to get the engine in my car. I dont think I could have built an engine like this one for $3k, it probably has $3k in machine work. it is blueprinted and everything.

Those may be cnced heads with the additional charge of $300 to hand finish them and not including the stock cores you need to provide.

thats alot of motor for 3k. my stock 350HO was 2.5ish, and i prolly only have 275 at wheels.

awesome runs nonetheless! sounds like a perfect daily driver!

Thanks guys. There are quite a few mustang owners who have discovered that it is built well too! LOL

Are you happy with the LSRacing chip? I need to look into this.

Very nice times by the way. Good looking car too.

That is some numbers. I hope my 383 I built with AFR 195 heads, zz409 Cam and superram will put out numbers like that. I also gotta say I like what you did with the fron lic. plate.

Overall I am very happy with Jayme Lippencott's work from LSRacingchips.com. He has built a few very similar combinations, and I'm guessing he sent me something very close to what he already had a full tune for. It starts a bit hard when its hot because it's a bit rich, and there is a really mild soft spot just above 2000rpm only when you maintain part throttle. I dont know if the soft spot is actually the chip or if its just the engine. Otherwise I couldn't be happier with the chip. The car drives great and the power is pretty linear and smooth, and I'm not complaining about 22 miles per gallon either....

doc, thanks a ton for the offer, and I would love to take you up on that. But I am very afraid that they'll have to clean my rear axle up with a sponge if I try to get chesty with a set of slicks. Once I can afford a 9" you can bet I'll be dumpin' the clutch on a pair of stickies.

My Firehawk (faux #26) also has a Lingenfelter 383 with the 4L60 & 3.73 gears. I ran a 12.3 @ 113mph on street tires then I put the slicks on and ran 11.97 @ 113mph
