where are the first injection guys?

I'd like to know more about whats involved with installing the first fuel setup. I don't see much info posted here. Is anyone running this setup? I am getting a 383 with first fuel injection that comes with computer and is tuned for the cam thats in it. I hope most of it is transferable to my 91 z28. I think i can use my stock tpi cables and bracket, but i'm not sure about fuel line compatability. what do i need to fab up connections? I'm sure i will run into problems and i want to be prepared. Does anyone have pics of their setup and any info that i may need?

Re: where are the first injection guys?

Im in the process of installing this now. I used braided fuel lines with the aeromotive APFR. the stock tpi throttle cable will work, however, the connector will need to be fabbed. havnt figured that out yet.

Re: where are the first injection guys?

I'm in pretty much the same position as jamieschott right now; trying to figure out what to do with the throttle and TV cables.

I'm also running braided fuel lines with an aeromotive fuel pressure regulator, although mine are from the tank all the way up to the engine bay.

I've also got a Monte Carlo, so my engine bay will look different than yours.

Here's a picture of where I'm at right now:

Here's where I mounted my FPR as I don't have heat in my car (Summer only vehicle):

Surprising there arn't more post around here about it, I know of quite a few guys over on a vette forum I post on that are running this setup. I thought there was a group purchase of these suckers a bunch of guys did around here not to long ago.. or maybe that was over there?

Re: where are the first injection guys?

as far as i know, the FIRST GP was combined between here and the vette forum.
i bought one, but i doubt i'll have it on any time this year, it was just one of the things i wanted for my motor build.
i still haven't decided if i want to go with a 350 or a 383.
although i may swap the heads on my car just to give it a try.

Re: where are the first injection guys?

Mine’s installed and “running”; Just need to figure out the issue that I’m having timing the car as the idle is jumping up to 2000 or RPMs when the base timing is set correctly. The current thinking is that I have a vacuum leak from the runners, which is my fault as I pulled everything apart a couple of times while fixing a fuel leak and tweaked two of them.

Here’s a more current picture than the one above taken just before I installed the upper radiator hose, filled the radiator up with coolant, and fired the car up:

Ken was nice enough to offer sending me a new set of runner gaskets free of charge, so I’ll be looking at the car again once they come in.

Looking good man. I'll have my 85 SS running with the FIRST in the next few months.

One thing to look for on the FIRST is to make sure the bolts are going in deep enough to seal the runners. I've had a few that were not tapped deep enough (or the included bolts were too long - how every you want to look at that) and would barely contact the runner flange. Also,, the bolts go all the way through and into the plenum and I worried that might be problematic. Some bolt holes were not exactly centered and I worried about a little leak there as well,,, so I got enough of the small nylon washers to go under the runner bolts to make sure both those areas were covered. That's pretty cheap insurance,, and something you might want to do,,, especially since you see you already have a problem.

Anyway,,, run all your bolts down to see if they're going down far enough before bolting everything back up. Double check that block off plate between the plenum and the T/B to make sure that's not leaking.

Also, it usually takes me a couple rounds of the procedure for setting the idle if I'm moving the throttle screw up or down before I can get the idle speed, timing, IAC, and TPS settings perfectly aligned.

I know you're going to be extremely happy with this FIRST intake. I hate you all are having trouble with the throttle connectors. I used a large machine screw bolted to the throttle lever and double nutted the outside to give the throttle cable opening a little wiggle room. I also found a machine screw with a head that the transmission kickdown clip just clicked right over and rigged that to work. Those are the little things that will drive you crazy,, any aftermarket carb you buy will have those same issues. I guess I'm so used to seeing it that I didn't think enough about it to give you all a heads-up.

Re: where are the first injection guys?

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely double-check that when I'm putting it all back together again with the new gaskets.

About the throttle cable/TV cable studs: After figuring it out the problem definitely wasn't that bad at all, and only ended up costing me about $10 for the correct studs:

Re: where are the first injection guys?

I have a question I need answered quickly (I hope) lol. I have read and re-read the related threads to this and I cannot find anywhere what intake gasket the FIRST uses out of the box stock. is it 1204 or 1205? I'm praying that it is 1204. Anyone?

Re: where are the first injection guys?

This probably isn’t of much help since I used the intake manifold gaskets supplied with the manifold, but I can say that they matched up 100% perfectly with the Vortec heads on my GM crate motor. Maybe you can figure it out from there?

Here’s my motor:

I was hoping that the list of suggested parts would come up with intake manifold gaskets, but no dice.

Re: where are the first injection guys?

actually that does help. your intake runners are 170cc, smaller than mine on my AFRs, so I doubt the openings on your heads are larger than mine. I just didn't want to have to mess with port matching my heads to a 1205 intake. Thanks!!!
