Re: 305 and HSR question
Many more will chime in but I think you should keep the original TPI because of the torque on your 305 and spray (Nitrous) it at the track. There are some that have gone 11's and 12's with sprayed 305's (Search it)
I put a HSR on my 357" with a LPE cam and I'm always wishing for more torque..... Don't get me wrong the HSR starts to cover alot of ground once your into some serious RPM, but how often is that???
I'm was thinking about makin a bigger displacement engine (maybe 388) just to get some of that TQ back in the lower RPMs and still scream on top
I'm not sure what kinda cam you were thinkin about putting in your 5.0L but where do you want your powerband???
Lots of variables here.....

XFi 268
Operating Range: 1800-5800 RPM
Duration Advertised: 268° Intake / 276° Exhaust
Duration @ .050'' Lift: 218° Intake / 224° Exhaust
Valve Lift w/1.6 Rockers: .570'' Intake / .565'' Exhaust
Lobe Separation Angle: 113°
I think that it's a large cam for a 305.... Not only is the duration a little high (read below...) But those valve lifts are BIG and you'll have to make sure your "worked over stock heads" can handle that kind of lift #'s...
My Lingenfelter 211/219* duration with .536"/.560" lift is sluggish in the lower RPMs (below 3000) like I have mentioned.... nothing a higher stall couldn't handle though I guess

Re: 305 and HSR question
Thats entirely to much lift for those heads...most likely they will max out on flow in the
.500 -.510 range even with the porting. The valve guides would have to be cut down and alot better spring used...i just read you info says you have 2.73's in your car also....you'd need 3.42's or lower to really get into the correct rpm range for this cam. Sorry...but its better to find thing like this out now...

Re: 305 and HSR question
A big duration cam and a big breathing intake on a smaller motor just doesn't add up..... make as much torque as you can especially with those tall gears.... I think that you'll have more fun with it myself....
and when it comes to racing it.... the torque will get you out of the hole and the nitrous will help pull those gears though to the finish line.
Having those 2.73 gears is like starting your Mountain bike in 21st gear. But with enough power down low to get you started.... you can fly like the wind on the top end right....?

Re: 305 and HSR question
i just installed the STEALTHRAM on my 90 305 gta. I LOVE IT!!!! I have the peanut cam and it used to stop breathing around 3800rpm with my 2.73's that's still fast. now it revs to 5k and just keeps pulling. i of course am scared of R's since it used to max out below 4k. but it just KEEPS PULLING now. i always thought it was the cam holding it back but it's all that track the air has to go down.
not as cheap as it looks!!! i was disapointed at how much more it cost than i thought it would i think i had about $800 into it by the time i was done with fuel lines fittings, fluids, plugs, ect. but WORTH EVERY PENNY..
I HAVE THE CENTER BOLT WASHERS!!!! i had to buy 50 of them to get a bag, drop me a line and i'll send them to you for like $10 instead of the $70 that wiend wants.
nicest thing is if you ever need to take it off it will take about 1hr instead of 5hrs!

Re: 305 and HSR question
Maybe sluggish was the wrong word..... Maybe just not as "responsive" as the TPI set-up.
I have to add that My 357" was running that super small peanut cam 179/194* .350/.394" lift. with the TPI and small "swirl port" 193 heads, which would've made it feel stronger and more responsive on the low-end side than even a stock 350 with stock 89 GTA heads and cam.
Now I'm running the HSR with LPE 211/219 cam on AFR 180 Eliminator heads which aren't quite as responsive in the low RPMs like the last set-up was, but man does she scream on top!!!!
So maybe it was just a larger leap for me..... I just love TQ!!!!

Re: 305 and HSR question
Where in PA are you?
My car was loads faster with HSR than stock TPI on my full bolt on L98 350. Still made 315wtq on a stock motor with exhaust and HSR on a lean tune. Thats not too far off a stock TPI setup. HSR wont make as much peak tq but it will make more torque everywhere else that counts.
If you do throw in a cam, something with around .500 lift is all you want and need, and keep duration fairly low with stock ported heads... 218/224 is a nice big grind for a 305 but the XFI version is too much lift. Try the cc502, same durations with less lift.
That cam and HSR would help that top end alot. Add a good converter and thats all you need to run good times. The converter and gear will make up for any loss of low end. Theres a guy at the track with a carbed 305 with a decent sized cam that gets off the line in a hurry with his auto with higher stall converter. I dont know what he has in that car but it does mid high 12's easily

I think it still feels good down low but being able to rev makes for a great driving experience. i don't have any track times sorry, but i know it's much more fun to drive.

.... I could have my TPI setup off in fifteen minutes. The only real benefit of the HSR is the location of the fuel injectors when replacing them, but then again, a gasket set for the upper TPI plenum is only about $15.00 anyway, so it's just a minor delay.

Re: 305 and HSR question
I don't know about the HSR on a 305, but on my 350 there is more than enough torque to blow the tires away in first and a lot of second gear. I'm going to the dyno this afternoon, so I'll report back on "loss" of torque.

Re: 305 and HSR question
Seem to be getting some decent info among the banter. In my 305 bird, I didn't really notice the lose in torque (although it was significant) because I did a t56 swap and 2.73>3.23 swap all at the same time. Skewed the results a little. With an LT1 cam, stock exhaust manifolds and completely stock tune I put down 226 to the wheels. Long tube headers and decent exhaust put me about 240 rwhp. I'm sure with a matched cam, you'd do fairly well. My torque was way low though I think 270 IIRC?
Of course the only reason I spent any money at all on the 305 is because all that stuff was CHEAP; $10 cam, $25 headers and a couple hundred on the intake. I love swap meets.
