Another Victor-E

Weekend project:
Put this:

in this:

and hopefully eliminate the massive vacuum leak that has plagued me since I first fired the engine. I would have loved to see what the modified TPI would do. Very heavily ported and modified edelbrock base and welded and ported SLP runners. I have developed a love hate relationship with TPI.

Re: Another Victor-E

The build got a bit delayed along the way. Lets just say the car was around before the wife, and well the car is still around... Hows the Novi treating you?

Had it fired last fall but couldn't find the massive vac leak in the TPI. Couldn't get the idle to drop and within a minute the pipes would glow a disturbing bright cherry red. After tearing it down looks like it was a combination EGR valve and runner gasket that didn't sit right. Base and runners are welded, siamesed and ported heavily. Gaskets are hand cut. I'll know after a thorough inspection tomorrow. Anyone looking for a modified TPI setup let me know

I must say I'm loving the simplicity of the single plane setup. Just gotta figure out how to run the fuel and gather a few misc bits and pieces.

So close I can taste it. Just need a few random AN fittings and a connector for the carb hat.

Looks good. I think you will like that intake. I like mine.
I think you will pick up some rpm range and power with the single plane over TPI and possibly better air/fuel distribution, but depends on how well ported that TPI was

Re: Another Victor-E

The carb hat is slightly larger than 3", lol looks like the perfect size for a rubber PVC connector. I still have some of those left, It's kinda become my trademark Now if we can dodge the bulk of the sn*w that's forecast...

Something doesn't sound right. If the pipes were glowing red, either your timing was way off, or you had a heavy restriction somewhere stressing out the turbo. A massive vacuum leak would keep boost pressure down, with no stress on the turbo at all. How did you check for vacuum leaks, did you run some carb cleaner by the ports and runners while the engine was idling? Did you check for a vacuum leak under the TPI intake manifold (in the valley) through the breather on the valve cover? What was the verdict?

Re: Another Victor-E

No verdict yet, I'll be going over everything this weekend. The tune definitely needed some help, timing was checked and everything was being monitored with a known good wideband. Checked around the runners, plugged all unnecessary vac lines. closed and disabled IAC, throttle blades fully closed. Only thing that was difficult to check was EGR, stupid TPI. Valve was in place but nonfunctional and right now is highly suspect. Engine would fire and flash to 3500rpm, only thing that would bring it down was to retard the hell out of the timing, that would only make the pipes glow more as the fuel burned in the pipes. Hopefully I fire with the new intake this weekend as the snow has turned into a non event

Re: Another Victor-E

Well first fire with the new intake, no real adjustments, started right up and idled almost perfect. Pretty good considering the prom was nearly 100% guessed, made no adjustment to TPS, IAC not hooked up, no coolant temp yet, no throttle cable and the gas in the tank probably cost about $2 a gallon. After about 5 minutes running I could tap the pipes and not have skin fused to it

Re: Another Victor-E

Just to give this thread a little closure, I went through the TPI and the EGR was hosed, it was stuck open and to top it off when I assembled the damn EGR I didnt use a gasket and never fully tightened the bolts must have been test fitting things and gotten pulled away then finished it later At least I was meticulous when assembling the rotating assembly because she's running like a champ now. So if anyone is interested in a monster of a TPI setup it's in the classifieds.
