anyone ever use a REALLY REALLY big cam with a miniram?
I have a 406 motor with a miniram now. AFR 210 heads and solid roller cam/valvetrain. I am currently using a 248/248 cam with 0.615/0.615 lift on a 110.
Has anyone ever used a bigger cam? I am curious to see how the miniram would handle it.
This is in an all out drag application: TH350 w 4500 stall, 4.56 gears, etc.

I know 87 TA has somethign along the same lines as your motor. 406, ported AFR heads to around 208cc i think, was a miniram and had a 248/25x cam i think, but it may have been in the lower 250's duration. Mid 600's lift. Not 100% sure on the specs. His car runs extremely well with a T56 manual. Runs mid 10's on motor alone. Doesnt seem to have any issues and he has been spraying 150-175 shots through it as well through a nozzle kit. Fuel distribution appears to be good enough to not have any issues.
He's goin to a single plane EFI setup now I believe for hopefully more power over miniram.
I havent seen anyone go much bigger than that on the cam.

Re: anyone ever use a REALLY REALLY big cam with a miniram?
Thanks for the reply. I know the next logical step is to go to single plane EFI but I want to keep costs contained for now. I was just curious on how big the intake can handle and people's previous experiences. My plans are to have the heads CNC ported this coming winter (2011-2012) and step up the cam a bit.
I see a lot of the LSX crowd going with big cams in the 250 range but not much when it comes to TPI/miniram/superram/stealth ram crowd.

His motor uses a box stock intake. If you opened yours up to better match the head flow, it should support the rpms and power but I dont know how much you are trying to make and how high you are spinning to. A miniram can be opened up to flow a good bit of air. Theres a guy on corvette forum using a ported miniram on a 450 inch sbc with AFR 235 heads...thats alot of airflow

Re: anyone ever use a REALLY REALLY big cam with a miniram?
I just saw a cam on TPIS' webiste that is what I was looking for.
264/264 duration @ 0.050 with 650ish lift on a 112 designed for use with miniram.
Right now I am shifting around 7000-7200 but I figured if I had the heads ported, I could handle a little more duration to take advantage of it.

Talked to a few cam companies and my engine builder.....
going with a comp cams solid roller 264/270 @ 0.050 with 0.674/0.674 lift on a 106.
I'll let you all know how it turns out

Nice, thats on a very tight LSA. Wonder why? Wouldnt think you'd need it that tight for that application.

How do you plan to tune EFI with a 106 ?
Thats going to be interesting.

Re: anyone ever use a REALLY REALLY big cam with a miniram?
I thought the cam might be a bit on the wild side, but I buddy of mine has an even larger cam on a 108 in a 415 sbc with the Holley Dominator system and tuning was no problem
I even went as far as to call Holley Tech support. They have an existing tune file for startup for a 244/244 on a 106 in their global file. They said it would not be a problem at all. Even mentioned a car they know the runs a 383 with a solid roller in the 270x @ 0.050 with over .700 lift on a 106 and it was tuned without issue.
I guess we will see.

Tuning a min ram equiped MAS car with large cam is no problem. I just finished tuning a 1988 Firebird with a 434, using a solid roller cam with specifications of 264/270 @ .050, 106 LCA installed at 102 ICL with .650/.650 lift. The car tuned in very well and makes good power.

Re: anyone ever use a REALLY REALLY big cam with a miniram?
Comp solid roller with crower hipo solid rollers$ and a comp polly dizzy gear that i had 2 modify$ with a sleeve because they dont make the proper shaft size 4 stock 89 TPI car dizzy.
If you do drive her on the street a lil bit and have power brakes move from 106 to a 110. it wont seem as peaky either. mine stil spins to 8k no prob..
I havent had mine tuned yet but I have driven it 3,000 semi easy miles plus a trip to the T/A nats and back with no probs. 12 hrs round trip.

How do you like the AFR 235's? I am thinking on stepping up from my non-eliminator 210's to comp ported 227's when I can afford the heads and jesel valve train. That would also bump the compression to around 13.5:1

I also switched from the older 210s,which I have forsale-shameless plug-,
I like the new heads very well. Im running offset lifters but still stock comp rockers and they work just fine. but I will b switching to a Jesel shaft set up soon.

I am kind of torn between the AFR 220 and 227's. 220's allow you to use stock rockers and lifters.....is the extra 7cc runner volume worth it?
What kind of power are you making with your setup?

Re: anyone ever use a REALLY REALLY big cam with a miniram?
I cud have used stock lifters and rockers w my 235s. its tight but stock type parts do work unless u use a bigger pushrod dia.
I used offset stuff just incase I wana pull the heads an weld an widen the head where the pushrod pinch point is.
As far as the power goes Im not sure yet. Still limpin her along with small injs.
I have a few other things Id like to do b4 she gets tuned. yup, she runs just fine with the STOCK 89 chips tune !
