Off the line HSR question

Hi Guys,

I asked this on the transmission forum but no one would respond. Hopefully someone on here with a HSR will respond I'm currently using a mostly factory 700r4 with my setup (see sig). In the next few months, I will be replacing it with a 700r4 from ProBuilt or another known vendor.

Until then, my HSR and Hughes 2500 stall seems to be sluggish off the line until I hit the HSR's power-band. I can't even spin my tires. I had 3:73's installed hoping this would help but it didn't make a huge difference. Would upgrading to a higher stall or smaller torque converter help get me moving (and spinning ) off the line?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Off the line HSR question

Has the motor, including / especially part-throttle & tip-in parameters, been thoroughly re-tuned for the current combo? I'd be looking at motor issues rather than trans. / torque converter issues, because when I had the HSR / XFI268 / AFR 195 heads on a stock short-block, with 3.73's and an Edge 2600 stall, spinning street tires from a stop or from a roll, through most of second gear, was eeeeezy. Still did it with the XFI280 cam...

The HSR sacrifices some low-end torque (compared to TPI, anyway), but when it's running right you should have plenty of power to light the tires.

Re: Off the line HSR question

Thanks for the reply Bill! I'm using a chip that TPIS burned custom for my specs. I'm starting to wonder if you're right and maybe there's something too conservative or out of spec in it?

Re: Off the line HSR question

Take a stock L98, put a HSR on top. It'll STILL spin the tires even untuned. Tune it and you'll get back a bunch of responsiveness and torque, as well as discover another 1000rpm worth of power to play with.

HSR is nowhere near as gutless as people like to say. The loss is minimal, about 20lb/ft before 4500rpm, after that the HSR will make more. This is on a stock, or near stock L98.

See if you can 'validate' the tune by putting it on a dyno and checking Air / Fuel ratio and knock counts. I've had a couple of mail-order tunes.....
hands-on, real-time tuning is the way to get it done right. But...

When I first installed the HSR, running on a tune for a modded TPI, it still blazed the tires when prompted.

Did everything go OK with the HSR install? No vacuum leaks, distributor installed correctly, etc.?

Re: Off the line HSR question

Thanks for the responses guys! Thirdgen89GTA, maybe I could stick the stock prom back in and see if it's more responsive? I guess that would rule-out the tune?

Bill, as far as I know, the HSR install went ok. I haven't noticed any vacuum leaks. My has a little bit of a surge +/- about 250rpm but I thought that's to be expected with my cam?

I believe the distributor is installed correctly but is there a way to check? The car seems to run ok going down the road. If it's a tooth off or so, will that effect the responsiveness?

Thanks again!

Re: Off the line HSR question

Agree to what everyone is saying. Should be no issue with spinning tire. I've been in a car with stock converter car on drag radials with the bigger 280xfi cam and old AFR 190 heads and low compression and it would light tires up fairly easily but alot more when I smoothed out the fuel curve and added bunch of timing down low. That car with its big cam and low compression you'd expect big torque loss but it still was able to roast the big 28" drag radials.

I'd look into getting tuning equipment and start doing your own proms unless you have someone close you can trust. Give the car some timing and it should spin tire.

Now NOT spinning tire is a good thing if everything checks out on motor and tune Traction wins races and lightens wallets when parts break haha.

Thanks scamaro355! Is the tuning software pretty intuitive? Or would you recommend buying a book to guide me along?

You don't need a book. You have the best tuning resource in the world right here. It's called the DIY-PROM forum. Read the stickies and go from there.

Tuning your own car (especially not a stock one) is a pain for a first time learner.

While there is a wealth of information available on TGO, it is TOO much for the beginner. Its like being presented with 1,000 books on F.I. tuning. But no idea which one to start with.

I barely feel like i know what i'm doing with the tune in my LT1 swap. Granted the changes I'm making are very small. But i'm about to do a big heads/cam/6spd swap. And MANY things are going to change. So for now, I'll pay someone to tune the car. I won't risk this motor on my own tuning skills.

Re: Off the line HSR question

I was hoping to use my existing custom chip as a base. Then tweak everything a bit to restore my lost low end power. Not sure if that will work, but that's the plan

Re: Off the line HSR question

On street tires I dont have a problem at all spinning the tires at all.. on DR's I cut 1.5's 60's with a 3k Vig 9.5 stall and just a 3.42 gear.

As it has been said, get it tuned. Enjoy!
