Thinking about an HSR/ZZ4 combo..thoughts?
Hey guys, i've been milling around different things I'd like to do to my 91 and I was wanting some input on a combo that sounds interesting. I've been thinking about doing a HSR/ZZ4 P/P head and cam swap to it and I'd like to hear if this would be a good idea. I'm not looking for insane amounts of power for this car but i'd like it to be fun. What do you guys think it would run? both power and economy wise? I think a 2800 and 3:42's would tie it up nicely. Any thoughts/advice would be awesome.

Your going to have to cut the guides and change springs to run that cam. At that point you might as well get some cheap vortech heads and a vortech SR. You would also gain about 25 hp by running an LT4 hotcam and it will be better suited to the intake. The vortechs have raised runners that will outflow the stock ported iron heads right out of the box.

GMpartsdirect.com sells the ZZ4 springs, locks and retainers pretty cheap.
You'll need to go with screw in studs if you run the stock heads.
I run the a ZZ4 in my 305 with 2600 stall and 3.42 strange gears. Runs great.

To clarify the combo I want to run is Ported and Polished ZZ4 heads. (Which are coming off my 305 when I have my 383 LT1 done) and my ZZ4 cam as well, with a HSR to top it off. Again I'm not looking to make this a race car, I have my 88 for that, lol. I just wanted to know if anyone has run a similar combo and what results they had with it.

There's a guy in my car club that runs a ZZ4 motor with the HSR. I forget the dyno numbers but I believe he was a bit over 300 rwhp without nitrous. I did have a chance to drive it for an extended period. The car is a blast to drive, but he had an automatic so I think that the tranny killed a lot of the fun before it even began. (his trans shifts at 4800-5200) The combo felt like it was still pulling strong and had some power left in it when the tranny would do a WOT shift. If you're looking for a good cruiser, you'd probably enjoy it. I drove the car for a good two hours to his house helping him to move it from a friend's house back to his garage and I was impressed.

I had a 350 factory L98 w/AFR 190s and HSR on top. Had a T56 and 211/219 Lingenfelter Cam.
It made 309 rwhp.
It was a blast to drive. Low end torque was awesome.
I don't know how that compares to your Vortech Combo you're talking...but thought I'd share...

zz4/HSR and t56 transmission gave me 300/355 rwtq/hp on a dynojet, 107 mph in the 1/4 @ 13.1 on street tires spinning like a ****. Its a blast to drive on the street

Sweet, this is just the stuff i was looking for. Jekyll, how was the mileage and manners of the car you drove? Obviously i know it's not going to be in LS territory but i'm curious.

The car's manners were really good. Felt like a stock car until you got into it more. As far as mileage, can't really comment on that to much, but it seemed that it wasn't much worse than stock if not the same. I was just enjoying the drive since my buddy was paying for the gas... Lmao

That's good to hear. Do you guys think I'd be safe with the stock 22lb injectors or should I bump them up to 24lb'ers? I'll be getting the Kirban AFPR to handle the pressure.

Re: Thinking about an HSR/ZZ4 combo..thoughts?
22's should be ok. use them if they are in good shape or else replace the old stock injectors with 24's. 24's are good to over 350whp. 22's should handle 330.
Should be a fun combo like others said. My HSR L98 with stock cam/heads was a blast and it was only 254whp running lean. ZZ4 cam and those 113 zz4/L98 heads with some porting will definately wake it up. Should get you in the 12's on a good air day with 3200 stall/3.42 gears/slicks
