HSR fit on stock heads or only aluminum?
I might have to pull my TPI off to change fuel injectors and if I go that far I was thinking of just replacing with an HSR. Looks like fitment is only for 87' and up aluminum heads...is this true or have others successfully installed on stock heads?

It's been a while so I can't remember the ones you need, but you can buy the beveled washers from McMasters (or possibly your local nut and bolt supplier)

That aside, you'll need the fuel rails and have to run new feed and return lines. There's a thread from about 18 years back that details the install and parts needed.
If you have an 89 or later (no cold start injector), the stock chip will crank and run so-so with about 12-degrees base timing but will have flat spots and tip-in issues. So, you'll need to either get the equipment to burn you're own chip or get someone to burn you one - for it to run right. Once you get it dialed in, you'll notice a drop in throttle response compared to the TPI, but it'll run about like a dual plane intake down low and a single plane up high - which isn't bad.
The FIRST might be something to consider unless you're planning on going with a larger cam and more gear ratio and stall speed. It'll run well with the stock gearing and stall speed as well as the stock tune. You can get it running pretty good with and a couple degrees bump in timing and can dial it in fairly decently with the fuel pressure. It won't be optimal but a lot closer than the HSR with the stock programming.

The 7540 will work on the 87 and up stock (non-Vortec) cast iron heads like you have. The "issue" is you'll need to elongate the bolt hole as the intake bolt angles are different. So, you'll need beveled spacers for the 4 center bolts on the intake. This is what Holley would want you to buy which is crazy, but gives you an idea of what the look like.

Wow thanks for the detailed response. I was eyeballing the FIRST and emailed Ken. If I got the FIRST it would actually work pretty good with a future 355-383cid high performance SBC, not as good as HSR but definitely would be good for revving up to 6K rpms. Plus I have some infatuation with keeping this car somewhat stock in appearance. The FIRST looks like a giant TPI. I read your info on the difference between HSR and FIRST 1/4 times. It appeared that FIRST held it's own pretty well.

I've always been partial to Aeromotive myself, particularly the big A1000. I used it for both the HSR and FIRST install. Picture below is of the older fuel rails (crossovers up front and rear) - I ran the feed up front and the return out the back..

Yes. The large cap will work with the FIRST but you have to grind on the bottom of the distributor housing. I had bought the small cap distributor for the StealthRam and reused it when I installed the FIRST. Worked out well for me allowing room for the big regulator mounted directly to the rail using a coupler..

I had the part numbers listed in an old thread for the wedges if you need them. They were cheap. And I did get them from McMasterCarr.

I had to drill out the holes a little larger. Also, the bevel isn't the perfect angle however the aluminum is soft enough that it will conform for an even clamping pressure.
