LED Dash kits now available (90-92 Camaros)
LED Dash kits now available (90-92 Camaros)
Hey guys... I finally got around to making a "kit" for those people that want to convert their 90-92 dash to LED lighting.
Here's a small description. Their will be 4 parts to it. The speedo module, the tach, the four center guages and the tach module. Each of these is actually a circuit board with the LEDs soldered to it The only thing the user has to do is "drop them in". To help secure them though, a drop of hot glue on some corners might be required. The way they will plug in is using one of the existing bulb sockets. All other bulbs have to be taken out ! The LEDs can be any color you want (red, green, white, blue, orange, etc) but I think blue might be the most popular.
If anybody is interested in this and wants to do it themselves I will build it on a case by case basis. If you send me your dash I can also install it all for you. Something to remember is that to get the best effect... white guauage overlays from MacEwen would be required. The stock guages are yellow, so any light coming from behind them will get mixed with the yellow. Therefore, the blue will apear almost green. Need to keep that in mind!
It cost me almost 100 dollars to make them and I will charge $150 altogether so $50 for my time.
As far as older (90 and down) Camaros and Firebirds... if anybody wants to send me a dash I will convert it for you!
Here's some pics of the "kit".
This is the speedo circuit board.

This is the same thing installed.

The tach board...

The tach module installed.

One of the center board (2 used for the 4 center guages)

The whole thing, lit up with no guages

And of course the final product you can view in my signature...
Notice you'll see some red LEDs on the side of the tach. I added those because I wanted the red line between 5k and 7k to light up red like it's supposed to.

Very interesting...but how exactly would you go about making the 89 and lower gauges work exactly? I mean no light shines through the gauges only around I believe. Anyway keep us posted.

Not bad... I believe in function over form. Even though they dont look like show quality pieces like a factory would make, they do the job very well and... you can't seem em!
With the 89 and down clusters I can still incorporate LEDs around the guages for a nice uniform light around the guage. I dont know exactly what it would look like, but if someone has a cluster just sitting around and wants to do this..... let me know.

That sounds like something I might be interested in too, I've never liked how the stock yellow-orange gauges look, can you make the climate control match by doing the same thing?

I love how that blue looks, but I have a black car with red interior and I 'm not sure blue would look right. I wonder how red would look? Probably not good with white-face guages. I guess I'm going to get left out of this one

The red would show up brighter than that on the actual thing wouldn't it?
Who thinks the red would look good with my red interior? What should I do for the redline? Make it orange or something?

That's what my dash looked like when I had my AutoZone red bulbs in. Problem with that was... it wasnt bright enough. I had to make new holes and add about 5 or 6 more bulbs. Even then it wasnt all THAT great. When I took it apart to change it over to LEDs I found out that 2 bulbs were burned out and one started to turn orange. lol I guess you get what you pay for huh...
What's the point ? You wont see the blue during the day. Mine are white guages, but of course you wont be able to tell during nighttime
I know someone has them in a pre 90 camaro so I hope he'll post a pic for you.

What is the brightness of those LED's? I'm thinking I'll go ahead and try it with red first and I like how you made the redline red even though you were using blue LEDs, very cool stuff.
I believe these are 1200 mcd LEDs. You dont need them to be very bright to get the desired effect because a lot of them are used.
Initiall my plan was to make all the numbers red and keep everything else blue. I might do that pretty soon.

Can you please list your source for LED's? I'm currently working on a project (not even close to guages...), and I am looking for cheap blue LED's. Thanks!
WWW.lc-led.com is my source.

Blackened - I have my 88 camaro dash I could send you to do this for me. But the thing is I want them in my 86. The 86 is a 145 MPH speedo and the 88 is a 115. Would that make a difference? I don't think it would you could use the 88 for as long as you want just retunr it to me when you are done. This would help all the pre 90 3rd gen owners i think. The 88 is going in the shop for a couple of months while i do all the body work which isnt a lot and repaint it. Let me know if it would work if i send you the 88 for my 86 dash? I would love to have that since my car is going to be all custom by march of next year. Damn they look awesome.
Yeah... have a pre 90 dash to work on would be awesome. Send me you 145 dash and I'll convert it for you. But I assume you know it's not gonna look anywhere near like the one in my signature. The whole guage will be blue, which will stil look better then the ugly **** colored bulbs. lol

It is great to see some women on the boards instead of all the over 40 women driving beatup 3rd gens that look like they are falling apart.Blackened- I will be sending you my 115 speedo I need the 145 in my 86. I'm getting it back soon and need taht one my 88 will be out of commision for a while so I could send you that one. And would you recommend white face gauges for this? How do you think red would look since i havea red car. or blue cause i have blue lights inside my car for some strange reason. they kind of look like porno lights. chicks dig it when i open the doors and the inside is blue. Well at least i hope so.

Well I guess when I get the car back I will ahve to take some really good pictures and show them to you. The pictures i have of my car now are taken when it was dirty and overcast outside. You will really have a thing for my paint when I take new pictures.

how about maybe writing a tech artical on, Have you thaught about that?
