if you know what you are doing, and the engine is cold, you can use some engine degreaser and a hose, brush etc.
thats about all you can do, once you get it clean try to clean it about every or every other week, that way it won't get really dirty and clean up time is next to nothing

just a quick question... putting a hose to my engine scares me.. ALOT...
What are other ways? Is there something out there that we can just spray onto a cloth or around the engine and just wipe it down... i'd rather spend that much more time, then putting a house in there...

Cover your distributer with plastic to keep it dry. That is really the only concern about using a hose in the engine compartment. I use my pressure washer with Simple Green all the time. No problems.

You'll be fine with water, just don't splast it in there. I just let it run from the hose.
Gunk or Engine Brite works great. And some laundry detergent works well too.

Man I like to use a concentrate bottle of Simple Green. It works on almost anything. Simply spray let stand for a min or two. Then wipe off. No water if you don't want to. Plus you get a really good piney smell in there.
Cool, thanks guys... I noticed i am on the message boards more then i see my car

simple green!!... i've found the best thing to do is just spray the hell out of your engine compartment with simple green, let it sit for a minute or two and then rinse it off. right after you rinse it off, run the car and let it idle for a little bit to burn off any moisture that may have leaked intp the wire boots or anything else so that it cant corrodge anything.
another trick i've been using is to get some engine detailing clear coat from like discount auto or autozone and spray the engin ebay down with this. keeps everything shiny and then next time you can just run the hose over it and everything will come off easier. i've had people tell me that the clear coat will rot hoses etc etc but i have had absolutely no problems doing this.

You shold be fine spraying water on the engine. Just not when it extremely hot. The only way in is through the carb, TBI, TPI, or which ever you have. And yeah its a good idea to cover the distributor. You know one day my brother was driving down the road on a rainy day. He has a 4 inch cowl on his camaro and when he hit this deep puddle a $h!T load water came through his cowl and hit the windshield. Didnt do a thing to the engine. You have to think about that when you drive in the rain you engine gets wet. Another good point is that if nothing is coming out of the engine there is nothing going in.(with the acception of air and fuel in the intake) So I say get some engine degresser and spray her down!

I detail cars for a living, everyday. All makes and models. Make sure you get a good degreaser like Simple green or Gunk. We pressure wash the entire engine. Just don't concentrate on the TBI, carbs or whatever. Never really had a problem with the distributor but some cars will not start if the distributor gets soaked so be careful. The degreaser will clean the engine and spraying it down with something like Armour all after washing will make it shine like a new penny. We do it all the time and then send our cars to the Auction to be sold to Public America. If we do it for a private customer we call it steam cleaning, charge $50.00 and just do what i wrote above(the same thing you can do at your local car wash). Try it. It works.:hail:
