firebird headlight conversion
firebird headlight conversion
has anyone seen pics of a headlight conversion on firebirds so that the pop up sections are removed and where they would be when down is covered by a clear or blacked out cover? i want to keep the streamlined look even at night and that would be pretty damn cool

a long time ago some one on this board did that they looked like they used sunfire lights. I thought it looked like trash but, thats me. maybe if they came that way I would be used to it.

Yes it has been done. A couple of times as a matter of fact. Did you try a search??? Here is a pic, fog lights were used in place of the headlights. Summit has a wiring harrness to make the conversion. Meet RAIF.

i did search. and yes, i've met raif - ram air inducted firebird, is it ?
=D
i read all about her car a couple months ago, every page of it - the red mirror tint allowed for medical reasons (migraines from sun? ) to how her engine was destoyed by a lousy mechanic who left an old gasket in it or something when he rebuilt it to the gears that were put in wrong so she does everything herself.
what i'm actually looking for though is a plastic housing that takes the place of the metal pieces that fold up and down. that way the lights don't move up and down, but are always facing forward under the plexiglass case.

I like the look of Amorget's car with the sunfire light conversion.
The foglight design doesn't eliminate the lines of the factory pop-up headlight housing, however, so it doesn't appeal to me, if i had a bird.

Call me old-fashioned, but I think that the stock headlights look far better than those in the pictures found in this thread. I personally like the pop-ups. (I know, I know, you don't care

the black firebird is jptaylor's.

Mine looks basically like the red one, but I have a black Firebird. After seeing all the pics of the other black Formula I was sure to model mine to look absolutely nothing like it.
I am sorry to you people that like it, but it really is a rather weak job of it. The reason the plexi doesn't line up at the top for the "Ram Air" effect is because you mounted it to the front radtiator brace, which puts it lower then the hood. One of the few ways to mount it, and does give some sort of Ram Air affect, but it mostly gives it a unfinished look. Also, if you do it, for gods sakes, DON'T PAINT THE BUCKETS YELLOW!! Just my .02 about the mod...

Insecure? Not in the least. The vocal minority's opinion bears no weight with me, esp since most of them have never accomplished ANYTHING of significance with their own cars. Notice the naysayers never post pics of their own car, or any of their accomplishments...they usually don't have any. I put those types in the same category as the armchair quarterback...they're sitting on their a$$, accomplishing nothing, but they're quick to criticize others. Most have never done anything harder than a bolt on mod, much less build a show winner (or drag car, autocrosser...whatever, I respect those that build their own), and know nothing about any car other than the one they're currently driving .
I don't like every car I see on this board...there are some that are true automotive abortions...but I don't attack people or their cars, unless they start it. If you have something to add to a thread, add it...if you have a positive or constructive comment, make it...otherwise, you should keep your mouth shut. I would hope a "moderator" would know that...but apparently all it takes to become a "moderator" is a high post count
BTW...we won our class at Super Chevy-Montgomery yesterday.
Just another thing for us to be "insecure" about

Actually, it isn't a Sunfire conversion. The guy built headlight pockets, added some fog lights/driving lights, and lexan covers. His site detailed all what he did pretty well, however that site is long gone...

I actually did some extensive searching to try and track down any other pics of that conversion. I had the pics stored, but lost them when my disks died. The above pic is all I was ever able to find! The lights in my opinion really needed better finishing work to look right. I search and found a thread indicating he was reding them, but nothing after that. And with the site gone, I could find nothing! Sorry!
Anybody save those pics by chance? I would not mind seeing them again! Every attempt can teach us something. Maybe someone could improve his design to look better!

Yeah, isn't it weird how some things come out like that. I think we both saw the same flaws in the first design and I still think that the style we did was the best looking fixed conversion. I would like to attach the headlight covers to the hood, however, and get rid of a lot of unneeded hardware. I just unplugged the headlight motors and took out the lamp and the hardware to mount it to the headlight assembly. It is also funny that we have almost the same hood, but mine is ASCD not Suncoast

Yes indeed!
I did the same thing...pulled out all the headlght hardware. Was disappointed to find that the headlight door was held on by that massive metal headlight skeleton. I had to remove so much of them, just the get my lights in there, then cutting out the front of the headlamp bezel was fun! You know I have now idea about yours, what did you do to finish around the lights? Did you cut up a headlamp bezel like me?
Let me know if you come up with a good idea for flushing those headlight doors. Heck I'm dealing with the hood trying to separate (top and bottom) on mine in the rear right now! Not sure what I would do to get the courners strong enough with glass! Personally I would be less leary if I still had a metal hood and just decided to weld the things to the hood. Be a pain though, they are not the same metal, but doable!

IIRC the headlight doors are alum, so would be REALLY hard to weld. I did very little cutting, and actually currently the car has stock style headlights after I got rear ended and the front bumber bar was damaged, which in turn threw the headlights all outta wack. I think the best way to do it would be to fiberglass, but it would not be easy to make it tough enough. Deffinately need to mold some ridges, etc into it.
I did cut the original bezel initially, but didn't like it. I ended up taking it all out and because the car was black it didn't show the holes near as bad. Most people didn't even notice that I didn't have stock headlights, much less there where holes around the lights. I would, now, make some bezels from thin sheet metal. I would probably also find a way to hold up the headlight door now that I have a welder and plasma cutter. Much easer to fab stuff up like that, though it would again, not be easy.

i believe ive actually seen that black firebird on the road in houston. I was driving down 1960 and he was pulling on from a parking lot and got right beside me and i saw how he had converted his headlights and they looked like the squares were clear and he had put bulbs behind it...i think it looked awesome but at the same time i want to keep my car a little bit original
also the car was grey it wansnt black i know that for sure so i dunno might have been someone else
