louvers

Ok, I know how everyone feels about louvers, but my car has had them on it since my dad put a set on in 87. I ordered a set from JC Whitney (the one piece plastic). They fu@#ing suck. The fit is terrible because they sit about an inch or so too high. Not to metion that they are too wide. I paid $280 including shipping. I would have got the good ones from Classic industries but they want $136 for shipping. Does anyone know where I can get louvers that aren't made by Astra Hammond? Thanks for any help.

He's not talking about hood louvers, he means the rear hatch louvers.

Sorry, I don't have any leads on where to find louvers, I just thought I'd get the thread back on track for ya.

Just bought a 91 RS with rear hatch louvers. I don't know if these are factory items or not (any way to tell?).

The "bolts" holding them along the sides have hex openings and one of them is missing; I want to replace it.

Thanks for any help!

Just look out. I hear they can all of a sudden fly off of your car.

They can't just fly off the car! There are clips that surround the rear window that are locked to the edge of the glass and get taped to the glass. The hinged part of the louvers get screwed onto the clips at the top. There are 6 clips on each side that the louvers screw into with that hex screw mentioned above. It's a 1/2 turn only screw.

For these things to fly off, the top hinge was never connected and the sides weren't latched. That's the only way! Know your facts.

Interesting, he sez the ends are plastic, mine are all aluminum.
You have to clear the rear 3rd light on later Fbodies so Im not sure those would fit all years.

Thanks for the responses!

I have just removed my louvers as they need to be repainted (they are some sort of plastic) and repaired in a couple spots. I also saw that the double back adhesive strips need replacing.

What I am curious about is where I can obtain a replacement quarter-turn hex fastener? One of the fasteners is missing. Does anyone know the manufacturer? Were they supplied by the dealer?

I have a set of aluminum ones that I took off my car. I'd sell for whatever I can get for them. All the parts are there. They fit fine, and I bought them brand new. They're made for a car without the high third brake light.

when i bought my 87 bird there was a crager louver sitting in back , when i was planing on painting back to black ( due to the fact that the person who owned the car before me SPRAYPAINTED THEM RED WHITE AND BLUE, now im not saying theres anything wrong with being patriotic its just wtf was this person thinking) , they were broke, after painting i was planing on buying a large hood bird decal, and cuting it so each peice of the louver had a peice of it on it so the aperence from the top veiw, yould see the bird,

You've only got to clear the 86's its the only one with the CHSML on the glass.

It appears that I have a GM set. I called the dealer and it doesn't sound too promising re finding a replacement quarter-turn-fastener.

Yeah that pissed me off. I couldn't imagine having those big @ss rear louvers fly off if they could. That would be a sight.

Little off topic but I remember traveling up 101 near SF a number of years ago. Some yahoo in an old pickup was blazing through crowded traffic and generally being a jerk. Suddenly divine intervention struck and his hood popped open and nicely took out his windshield. Fortunately for us all he was able to stop safely and contemplate this development at his new-found leisure.

My wife says if she could have special powers, she would be the 'Traffic Avenger.'

Your louvers are not factory!! They are aftermarket. Factory sets look one piece.

I just purchased 2 sets of 91-92 louvers. They are both brand new, in the box. The 91-92 sets have the 3rd brake light setup in them since the light was inside the glass. I will be using both sets to create one set for my car (without the 3rd light). I will have the 2 side pieces and a few of the slats available if anyone needs them. Contact me offline for more info.

Good news, sort of.

The dealer still carries the hex-quarter-turn fasteners for the factory rear hatch louvers (91--there are six fasteners all together) but they are $20 each. I only needed one so I bit the bullet.

This dealer doesn't make me pay in advance so I don't have a receipt with the number. The parts manager said it would be in in a few days--I'll pass it on to you then.

louver hardware

All I need is the mounting hardware I've been looking for months! So are you guys saying that any GM dealer has them?

Cost doesn't matter, I'll just use my GM discount

I already checked the GM assembly plant just b4 I got laid off
Nothing

Well, at least they had those particular fasteners. I heard the guy punching in the order over the phone and it seems like the computer voice said there were 20-30 in stock (something like that). Maybe once those are gone that's it (?).

Worth a shot.

I need new double sided tape to attach them to the windows. I am guessing an automotive body shop would have that, or I guess I could use clear silicone, which I have a full tube of.

hardware

Well, I just got off the phone with the parts guy at a GM dealership. He said they could help me if they were factory louvers. Mine are Kobels He said the hardware wouldn't fit
How different could mounting hardware be for these damn things!
Maybe I should just hang it up and sell the ****in things. I'm tired of them collecting dust in my living room!

I could take some pictures of the hardware. I don't think it would be too difficult to fabricate them. A race outfit like Truechoice could supply the fasteners themselves (usually pop-rivet type items).

Do you want to give it a shot?

Absolutlely! Please do. Do ya think they're compatible with Kobel louvers. I mean aren't they all basically the same?

Email is Makai2200@aol.com, unless you want to post it here for anyone else that may have use for them.

Thanx, Marie

Don,

That part number for the quarter-turn fastener is:

10027845 and is described as a "stud."

The parts guy was real decent when it came in. He felt bad that the price was so outrageous ($20 @) that he wholesaled it out to us. Priced out at $16 and change. Every little bit helps.

The part is not painted black (silver finish) and still needs the flexible grommet/washer that retains it in the louver panel. I went to Lowe's and bought a rubber washer and trimmed it down. If you don't use that washer there is a good chance it would pop out if it ever became undone.

I was thinking about people's comments re the louvers flying off at speed... On mine, the double sided tape had lost all of its tackiness/adhesion on several of the fasteners. Keeping track of the adhesive condition is probably key to keeping them intact. Another issue is protecting the plastic from UV with paint. The plastic can become brittle over the years without it.

Anybody looking for factory louver parts? I purchased 2 complete sets of 91/92 louvers and made 1 complete set for my IROC . The reason for 2 sets, was the 91/92 has the CHMSL and my IROC does not. I took 2 slats from one set to replace the 2 slats with the light provisions. The remaining parts are the 2 ABS curved pieces, 2 91/92 slats with the CHMSL provisions, 2 complete mounting kits ( 1 set had 2 mounting kits in it) and the remaining slats. There are supposed to be 10 slats, I took slat 2 and slat 5. If someone has a damaged set, they can build a brand new set from what I have. If interested, let me know and make an offer. These factory sets are getting hard to find and expensive.
