OOPS. A tree got the best of the IROC.

Well its been a while since I've been on the net. No more cable modem, so it sucks getting on with this crappy 56K. I've gotta get the cable back.

Any how, about a month ago I took a corner too fast and slid off the road and the *** end slamed into a tree. Not really even a tree, more like a bush, but it f'd the car up pretty bad.

Can anyone tell me if this is fixable? I'm thinking its not worth it, considering how much the car is worth vs. how much it would take to fix it. I'll probably find another body (91 or 92 Z28, or maybe another IROC) and put the motor and tranny into it. And while the motor is on a stand, I'll give it a healthy rebuild. I've had a couple guys tell me that they can fix it cheap, but you know how that goes. What do you guys think?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well I'm prepared to spend however much is needed. But since the car has few other things that need to be done, interior work etc... I'm thinking about starting over with a straight body and decent interior, if I can find something like that around here.

Right now I need the car to drive around in, but as soon as I find a cheap truck or something else to drive, then the car will be going into storage.

That pic. is not really that revealing, but you can see where the double reflection is, thats one dent, then right above the wheel there is another crease. Also where the side spoiler was, there is another deep crease that may or may not be repairable, I dunno. Its gonna take alot of cheesy body filler to make this thing straight again, LOL. Nice brake light fix huh. LOL Duct Tape is so awesome.

Thanks for the reply.

I'd say go and get some estimates done. Then from there decide what you want to do. If it's gonna run you about the same as a getting a better one, I'd say get the better one and sell yours as a fixer upper. But hell, that's me.

defidently keep the car.
the worst part would be the quarter.
and even if it can not be repaired you could always cut off the damaged part fab. (or get) a piece of metal for the area and weld on.

and the bumper cover, spoiler and tail light you can find in a boneyard for cheap.

i say keep the car. for sure.

If you trust the guys.. have at it.

Since you asked.. I think that is rather puss damage to come to the conclusion to sell it (unless you'd like to sell it to me )

To have a 'real' body shop fix it would be pissing $$ away IMO.

I had a Z71 jack the rear of my beater and do much worse damage than what you have. I ended up taking the $1k the insurance gave me (probably would have been alot more if my car was worth something) and fixing it myself for $150.

It took me under 8hrs & a 12pk to cut/splice/prime my rear quarter panel.

At the least.. it could easily be hammered into rough shape and a little body filler to make no one but you the wiser about it.

Ultimatly.. it's your car.. your decision.

The frame rail is on the inside of the wheel well. The damage pictured would need to be roughly 6" deeper to get into frame damage. The only thing that's going to be bent on that corner is where the ¼ panel skin is spotted to the metal behind the tails.
I guess really, you'd have to have cut that whole section of your car off to fully get what I mean.

The red area on the pic below is where I spliced in the new ¼ panel, the green area is what was smashed in roughly 6" by the Z71. luckily, it hit just behind the impact bar so none of that got pushed over. It also destroyed the original tail light.

*guess the image wouldn't hurt to add

LOL Duct Tape is so awesome.
That is until you try get it off and you are left with a HORRIBLE residue...

Remember if you plan on selling it and buying a new one.......not many people are looking for damaged cars.......

The $1200 was worth it tho because it was done right. Filled w/ metal not bondo. It also made me decide to repaint the whole car.

I say repair it . If you can get your insurance to pay for it, hopefully you have insurance. i don't think it looks nearly as bad as my car did when i wrecked in august of 98. I was driving down I-10 here in houston where it was 3 lanes across and was cut off by a speeding idiot as I was changing lanes from the fast lane to middle lane and had to come back to the fast lane but the person in front of me had already hit their brakes and as I mashed my brakes down to avoid a collision the car started shaking side to side and was thrown up into the gaurdrail in the emergency lane(on the left side of the fast lane) causing my car to spin counter clockwise doing two 360s across the freeway into the ditch on the otherside. I had the following damages
busted axle, cracked fuel tank, crushed quarter panel, smashed rear bumper, smashed tail light, rim bent, had to have frame straightened, all this came to about $8200 in damage and I am glad that I got it fixed(was almost totaled by the insurance company). But then again it depends if you are willing to put your time or money into the repairs if insurance doesn't pay for it. Sorry for the long post.
