Got car painted. Now painter wants to paint it over..NEED ADVICE!!

I got my white Z-28 painted white about a week ago at a body shop. They painted it base coat/clear coat. Overall the car came out pretty good. Except for like 3 drips and a weird part where it looks wavey. The guy tried to take the drips out but burned the paint. He now says he will paint the whole car over again. Would it be bad to paint another coat over the base coat clear coat??? Should he do anything special since he is re-painting it?? Can you guys give me some questions and things to ask and what he should be doing on this seond application??

thanks a lot for any info..

it would be greatly appreciated

dan

I don't know much about painting, but if that is his job, he should have all the answers for you.

He'll probobly sand it to rough it up a little, I'd do one of two things, get it re-done or not pay for it.

I think it's commendable that the guy actually said he'd repaint it, instead of trying to BS his way out of it. Cool deal.

Yes, I am pleased and happy that he will repaint the car again. I understand that it is commendable. He said he was going to sand it to rough it up just as 86Fyrbrd said...But I was just wondering if he should take off all the new paint? or if would be ok to just paint over the new paint? The paint job now is not that bad..But does have a couple errors. Also should I have him paint a few more coats of clear coat? would it benefit?

thanks a lot,

dan

It shouldn't hurt a thing for him to just rough it up and paint over it. You may end up with a fabulous paint job!

There is a certain thickness that they recommend you don't exceed, but I only think that is when you get a serious amount of paint on it.

Well they will have to start all over again I would assume. That means sanding it down, wet sand, prime, paint, clear. Just make sure they do all that and you should be fine.

Paint needs time to breathe! Even after you clear the car the solvents try to escape/evaporate hence "solvent pop"! If I were you I would have him do the whole car again. The painting process isn't something that should be rushed. So I doubt that he would be willing to strip the whole car and re-paint! What kind of paint did he use? Also, if he has sags or drips he could remove those w/ a "nib file". Usually a good painter doesn't get "drips and sags", I hope you didn't go to Macco!

Thanks for everyone's feedback. First off, I didn't go to Macco! It is a local auto body shop, and I have seen a lot of work he has done and his satified customers. He tried to get out 2 of the drips but burned the paint. Maximus when you say, "If I were you I would have him do the whole car again. " Does that mean sand it all down again or paint over the new paint? Also what is "solvent pop" thanks for the clearification. I just don't want him to paint over something which is not going to hold the paint or could cause future damage.

Thanks for any info and eceeryone's responses!

Solvent pop is just where the paint hasn't had a long enough time to dry and let all the solvents in the paint escape, if you don't wait long enough and paint over it and the solvent tries to escape is will put little spots all over the paint where is tried to escape and its called solvent pops. And if he baked the car which most all shops have the ability to do so then he doesn't have to worry about that. And its fine if he just sands it down and reshoots it, it won't hurt anything. Also a 'nib file' isn't using for taking out sags or runs, its for taking out dirt nibs, if he has sags our runs he should just be able to shave them out and then sand them and buff the car and you shouldn't even be able to tell. And any painter can run or sag the paint, NO paint job is perfect, i've seen painters that paint for 20 years that still run the paint every once in a while. I really doubt this guy will mess anything up, he should know what he is doing.

I do some paint work and help a local paint shop that has been doing it for over 30 years. It will not hurt a bit on what he is going to do. The way he described is the correct way of doing it. Matter of fact, the more coats of paint the better. It will not cause ANY problems painting it over this quick. Most of the time when a paint job turns out bad they do this and you never know it. If he used the correct heat range paint, etc, the paint job has had time to harden and I am sure he did. If for any reason something would come up it would within the first 2 to 3 weeks but I have yet to see one that has. Hope this helps.
