I'm really starting to think about getting some body work done so I can finally get my car painted. I'm am really tired of seeing a few dents, rustspots, and faded paint on my car.
I don't really like the color I have now because it doesn't offset all of the black trim I have. I was thinking of silver, gunmetal grey, dark tangerine, or Maui blue - basically a color that looks great contrasting with black. The thing is that I would not get a full respray. I would get the door jams painted but not the engine bay.
How bad would this look to not have a full body respray by taking everything out and off of the car? Does anyone have partial resprays like this where parts of the car are still the original color? Any pics would be great.

Color Change
My 91 RS had GM paint cancer big time. After getting no help from GM on this, I got at it myself.
This was more work than I expected. I did all disassembly, sanded to all bare metal and removed all ground effects, including front and rear bumper cover.
Fortunately the body was in excellent condition, so there was no rust repair to speak of on the body, just a few parking lot dings.
While the car was dis-assembled, I also removed all weatherstripping.
I had the car primed and block sanded, then painted.
The paint is by Glasurit (red pearl).
I then did all re-assembly. Using small zip lock bags to keep fasteners organized during disassembly saved me a lot of heart ache. I wound up with none of those "mystery fasteners" at the end of the project.
Putting the rear hatch back on took a full day to get it right.
Whatever you do, bring your checkbook- This job cost me over 2 times my most liberal estimate, but I do not believe I'll have paint issues in the near future.
I forgot to add- I did not do the engine bay initially and it is not noticable until the hood is up. I sprayed all door jams, even substantial parts of the interior, since I had it all out.
I am in the middle of an engine change right now and painting the engine bay will be a major part of this project.

Had mine changed from maroon to black. Came out pretty well. They did the door jambs, and trunk area... couldn't do the firewall very well without me pulling it. So some of mine is still red.
But for the most part, you'll never notice it.

Zepher man that 91 Z28 spoiler looks awsome on your firebird, I would go with that one.
the WS6 wheels look sharp too, I would go with them, but getem polished. They'll look really shap on a black car.

Thanks. I'm not looking for a show quality paint job since I will still continue to drive my car on a regular basis, although not everyday and in the snow. I will be keeping my car for quite a few decades so I think I will go ahead and choose a color I like.
Any pics of the hood up that shows the color has been changed?

GFX Treatment
CDN_87IROC-
I tried the aircraft stripper as well. The stripper laughed at the paint, then I laughed at the paint and then I laughed at how high I was (Poor ventilation).
Like the rest of the car, I used an electric orbital sander (yes, electric, and yes, I'm a hillbilly). On the plastic, I used 220 grit, nothing coarser!
After doing this, if you look real close, you'll notice a fine, fuzz on the plastic surface. Prior to primering any of the sanded plastic parts, you have to put on a sealer (it takes care of the roughness caused by sanding). I can't remeber if my guy sanded after sealing, but I don't think he did. I'm not sure of the name of the sealer, but a good paint shop can hook you up for sure- it was nothing special.
As far as sanding on plastic parts goes, I only roughed the surface. I didn't remove all the paint on the plastic parts, my main objective was to remove the clear coat and make sure any major scratches were sanded out. I let the sealer, primer, paint and subsequent wet sanding do the rest.
I should add- removing any more of the paint than necessary only increases the surface area of "fuzzy" plastic that has to be sealed and paid special attention to. That is why I tried to only remove the clear coat and any scratches.
Hope this helps-

Here's one, its all done black with a brush now, so it isn't too odd looking, just the silver by the hood opening on the sides

Mine went from this,
To This...

I've painted the headlight buckets black since that picture has been taken. Only just started working on cleaning up the engine compartment about 4 months ago, this was with some work done.
This was just taken about 2 weeks ago...

Kinda slowed down on working on things since it's gotten a bit cold out plus the rain and snow

EvilCartman,
The color you choice goes well with the previous color so It doesn't look bad. The colors I want don't match the current marroonish color I have now. It's not like I'll be taking my car to shows so it most likely will not be a big deal.

Wow, I did not know those were the same cars. The solid white looks really sharp. Those Hoopstar wheels enhance the looks too. Looks real sharp.

thanks.....i cant beleive that they were the same car either.......its amazing how painting it all one color makes such a big difference
I had this done, I went from the stock two-tone metailic blue and grey, to blue pearl, didn't get the engine bay done cause my engine is not all dressed up, so i figure when my engine looks as good as the outside of my car then i will get the engine bay painted
the only thing wrong with my paint job is that the guy that did it didn't re-spray the hatch and hood hinges
still looks good though
and if i knew how to post pics i would

I really like that color. Its the same paint that i was going to do but i stuck with just a solid color. You can not see the "pearl" that great in the picture but rarely do you ever see it well over the internet in pictures. Looks good IMO. Maybe if the "IROC-Z" was in the factory place and lettering, it would be bad ***! Keep it clean. later
I asked him to use the factory letters, but then he said it wouldn't go good with the ghost lettering cause of the thin lines
so i said ok, then use solid ones, not even thinking he would move the letters, he did
i was pretty mad, but nothing i can do about it really

My IROC is almost the same color as stock (actually, I just added mica to the stock paint) but I did all visable surfaces and painted the engine bay in flat black. My GTA is pearl white instead of the stock white and I did all visable surfaces except the engine bay.
I would never do a color change unless I did the engine bay. That's why the GTA stayed white instead of yellow. Nothing screams "half-assed" more than popping the hood and seeing a different color.
