Adapting a 5 by 5 wheel to a 3rd gen Bolt Pattern?

Hey guys,

I have a Trans Am with 3 very rare out of production rims on it (one got bent and had to be trashed). Now after looking 6 months for a replacement I finally found one on E-Bay. Now it's a 15x7 wheel with 4.50 backspacing, and the bolt patter is a 5 x 5. Now is there any way to get this wheel to fit my thirdgen (5x4.75 pattern)? Can I get the correct bolt pattern drilled into the wheel somehere, or possibly get adpaters?

Also will that backspacing look ok on a thirdgen?

Thanks for the help,
-Max

If you can run an adapter... that would probably fix your lug problem really easy...

I don't know about the backspacing/offset of our wheels though., or how that compares to the ebay wheel. Your best bet is to call a local rim dealer and ask them. Give them the specs and see what they can suggest. I don't think changing the existing lug holeson the rim would be safe, but again I'm not a rim specialist. Honestly when I got my rims, I let the tire shop handle the size of the spacer/adapter I had to run. The had all the numbers to compare.

Though a rim shop may try to just talk you into other rims by convincing you it can't be done. Try to find a rim repair shop...ask them about the hole problem. Ask the rim sellers about backspacing/offset and how it would fit on your car.

What are these rims, do you have a pic? Heck easier yet...what is the ebay link...You can PM it to me if you would rather. If they have center caps that cover the holes a rim repair place might be able to just drill completely new holes in the unused space, but it may also compromise the rims strength. Hard to say....

Hope I ahve helped a little...Sorry I don't know more...In a few month though, I'm sure I will be able to tell you all about how to fit wheels...once I start trying to get the 82 fitted out in some rims.

if the wheel is a wheel with a cover that hides the lugs, you can cross drill the wheels but it would have to be done at a machine shop. if it is a single pattern wheel with open spaces, then you will not be able to do it. (it can be done, but the cost will far outweigh the worth. as far as an adapter, one inch is eqivalent to 24.5mm. the offset on a t/a front wheel is 0 and the rear is +12. a 4.5 offset wheel is close enough to 0 to work if it can be cross drilled. if not, an adapter, (usually the smallest adapter is 1.25") will cause the wheel to sit an inch from under the wheel well.

email me at dj_spydermann@yahoo.com if you have any other question concerning this.

sincerely, dgravois (mr. big rim rider):lala:
