Plastic gauge cover is spotted, cant get rid of the spots

Just bought my first thirdgen last week, a 1990 firebird. the gauge cover is pretty spotted and i cant figure out how to clean it off. looks like someone used a spray cleaner that damaged the plastic. i let it sit for a couple hours in hot water in the sink with dish soap, didnt help at all. any ideas how to clean this off? someone recommended i try plastic polish but ive never heard of the stuff. i hope this can be cleaned off, i really dont want to buy another dash cover.

i'll look for the plastic polish stuff, but ive never heard of it. whats a good brand? Anyone know where to buy a new cover for less then 50 dollars? thirdgenresource has them but $50 plus shipping. might hit the junkyards and hopefully get lucky.

Mine had scratches in it whenever I bought my car, and I used that GS-27 paint scratch remover... it really cleaned it up. I'm not sure if that's still available in stores anymore, but it may remove some of the spotting. If that fails, you could probably fabricate a new panel out of some cheap Plexiglas and a dremel.

Enough time with polish and it should come off. Mine was the exact same way. The problem is that the spots are tiny scratches in the plastic. I removed the spots on mine with finish 2001 car polish. Note that this also works well to remove light scratches from CDs.

hey! guess what..

i wanted to give the polishing a shot but didnt have any car polish on hand. so i used the next best thing, toothpaste! i gotta say its coming out really good, i spent about a half hour so far and got a few spots still left, but the parts that are done look brand new. id say withen 15 more minutes of polishing the whole thing will look brand new! thanks for the idea ward. i'll post some pics when im done to compare it to the before picture.

you can use paint polishing compound for the big stuff, and then smooth out any blurry spots with the CD polishing kits.
