Painting the rims........is it possible?
I have attached photoshopped image of what I would like my car to look like. I really like the black rims but I dont want to buy new ones. I was thinking about painting them myself. I was planning on taking the finish off the rims with a wire brush then mixing up a thin batch of rustoleum high gloss black mixed with clear coat and then spraying it on the the rim and center caps masked off. The outer edge would still be the metal like in the pic. I just dont want to screw this up and have my rims looking like total crap. I think if I could pull this off it would be really cool but I wanted to see what everyone else thought. Any suggestions on this process or on the appearance would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jason

Personally I would polish them and Then powdercoat them in a Black chrome or black tint. to get the chrome smoke look going on.
Mmm, I might have to do a set to see how it looks.

Hey, Ive got some experience with this one... i had the GOLD irocs on my car, decided that the gold looked just a little too "latino" for me. I went to the parts store, picked up some spray on paint stripper and took off the gold and cracked clearcoat. DO NOT USE A WIRE BRUSH. scratches th living hell out of the machined aluminum. Use a brass brush or a good hard plastic brush to get the finish off. I strongly suggest not putting them back on after youve stripped them, they get dirt embedded into them fast, and it will screw up your paint. I thought the same as you about stragiht gray being too boring so i did a candy apple metal flake black that you can get at any place that carries the PLASTI-KOTE line. DO NOT USE RUSTOLEUM. ITS CRAP!!!! I did one wheel with the rustoleum before deciding on the flake and it scratched right off. It doesnt adhere worth a crap/// Use a good quality clearcoat as you will want to have something durable on your wheel. Use Plasti-Kote clear or go down to your local auto body supply and have them mix you a can of spray clear with a big fat helping of hardener so it doesnt scrape off. You should be set. I woulld also suggest polishing out any areas that you are not going to paint, just looks better (cheap chrome!) Once you polish them and paint them, it looks awesome. Email me with any questions.

I was showing what the rims might look like Powdercoated with Chrome Smoke or such a powder.
They are POWDERCOATED and I own my own business doing it.
Drop me a e-mail if you want more info

what do you guys think these rims would look like black chrome powdercoated...
(look at how bad the clear coat is... YUCK, these will take some elbow grease.)

Go for it, I think you would need to sand the rim down a bit and then go over it with a good black paint then a clear or something that would seal it. In my honest opinion, black rims look cheap. No matter what car, they just look cheap, they have no character to them nothing, I' say tint the windows, do what ever, but leave the rims...for the love of ***, leave the rims.....

whatever you do, dont mix clear coat with another paint, a lot of times mixing em will make it not stick to anything, or not dry. spray black, then sand a bit with 1500+ grit wetodry and then clear coat.
