Killer deal on my RS, need input......

Hey all. I am a new F-body owner (I've always liked them, this is the first one I have owned though)

I bought my '92 RS 305 from a friend 2 weeks ago for $1500 ( a STEAL) in the condition you see it in.I came with a Flowmaster, and K&N filter and open air element. It's automatic, and it even came with the audio system pictured. It also came with an Aiwa MP3 player head unit. I am in love!

I just had a question. My rims look like Z28 rims but they are chrome. Did Chevy make them in Chrome , has anyone ever seen that before?

Here's the pictures of it I took over the weekend. I look forward to modding it and perhaps even meeting up with some fellow 3rd gen owners on the board.

Damn a heritage edition RS for 1500 bills? Thats a sweet deal man. Car looks real clean. I assume you got the 305 tbi in there? What about milage? As for your wheels, they were never chromed from the factory, so someone must have had them plated at some point. Couple guys on here have chrome plated wheels like that. Either way, real sweet car.

Spin Demon, I believe those wheels have been polished. They are niccccce.

In 1991 and 1992 The RS could be had with
either the 16X8 wheel (like yours) or
15X7 standard.

Oh, welcome to the boards!
Sounds like you got a great deal.
Is it a V8 (305).

Thanks, guys. Yeah, it's a 305 TBI and it has 128,000 mile approx.

I still can't believe the deal he gave me. I asked him why he wasn't selling it for more $$$ and he told me he was doing his buddy (me) a favor. (he is pretty well off with money)

I had it checked out by my mechanic and he said it runs great, and looks mechanically sound.

I really want to get a Z28 spoiler for it. Does anyone know of a good aftermarket manufacturer who isn't too expensive?

No, My brother has a 1992 RS Coupe. (Chrome) He plans on adding a 383 after he graduates. I also plan on doing the same, but will be looking for a 92 Camaro once I graduate. When is the best time to look for a camaro to buy?? Are there certain parts of the year where the prices or cheaper or just when I come across a good value... Thanks

Here is a picture of his 92 coupe

Yeah great buy! Welcome to the boards! I hope you have fun modding your car. I'll just say it up front, dont spend any $$ on that motor. If it runs good then just leave it alone. Any $$ you want to spend on engine mods you should just save up for a motor swap (L98 350 TPI). There is alot of info on these boards so have fun. 3rd gens are great cars. They can go fast and handle great. If you have any questions about anything, use the search feature and you'll find the answer. You'll find that so much is possible with these cars (motor, suspension, interior, etc). Oh yeah, your first mod should be SubFrame Connectors.

Thanks again all for the kind words. I still can't believe the deal that I got on it. I went with my girlfriend's father to look at the car, and he started yelling at me "You better buy this car right now or I will!! this guy is stupid for selling it so cheap!!" heh...

I asked him after I bought it, why he sold it so cheap. All he said was "I'm just helping a friend out.." He just bought a new Toyota Matrix and plans on modding the hell out of it (he has $$$).

Vortec350, your brother's RS looks pretty sweet. That's the spoiler I want to get for mine.

I set up a web page with all of the pics to the car. I plan on adding some pics of the interior (which is immaculate) and engine as well. it can be found Here

Another question, is it better to lok for a crate L98 motor or is the price that much higher than a used one?

Definitely a fabulous deal. If you want to get those rims chromed your local accessory shop can probably do all 4 for around $400-$500 (maybe better). I live in LA, so rims are the name of the game here ... But ya, the deal you got on a 92' is not a steal. Thats highway robbery.

Welcome to the boards.

first he sold you the car for $1,500
Then he decided to go from a Camaro to a Matrix.
THEN he decides to trick out the Matrix??

Is your friend on drugs???

Sweet lookin ride there man. Ive always loved the polo green cars.

Ok, I think I'm just a bit confused. What alternatives do I have for engine upgrades? Since I saved a lot of money on the car, I figured I could spend that cash on a new engine instead. Will any 350 do, or are there some specific engines that work well in my car?

Get a crate engine. One that is built up with all the internals. Go big or go home. Go carbed if you can to save some money, and get better performance. You can turn that RS into a importsmoker, or better yet, z06 blaster.

Yeah, its actually in the body shop right now, someone rearended the camaro, Didn't hit very hard but flexed the rear bumper cover enough to chip the paint off. Also it pushed my brother into the car in front of him, none of this was high speed, just minor damage to the front and rear bumper covers. Both bumper covers are getting replaced, new carpet installed, and a SS hood put on, aligned, and painted. The body shop has had the car since novemeber. I believe the price he quoted my bro was a little low so he's keeping it as a weekend project so he doesn't have to raise the price. My brother doesn't mind since its storing it inside for winter. I'll post pics to you guys after it gets all done.

I can't wait until I buy my 92 camaro, not too much longer now. I just had a job interview with monticello spring corporation (monticello, IN) They need part time work during school and a full time internship over the summer, so that means I will be staying at my apt over the summer (@PURDUE). If i get that job i'm going straight to autotrader.com to buy another THIRDGEN!!!!

If you're on a budget you can find a used L98. I got a L98 for my 90 RS (currently L03) for $700. Came out of a 90 IROC and has under 60k miles. With a starting price like that you could probably build a badass car for under $5k total (some parts used). Just look for the right deals .. dont rush it, only buy exactly what you want, dont settle for less ... that kinda stuff. It took me a year to find that L98.

You can swap any SBC into your car. L98 (cheapest) , LT1 (great for the price if used), Crate (best bet if you want a 'new' engine) ... even LS1 (very tricky and expensive). You can also swap in a Buick 3.8 Turbo v6 from the T-Types and Grand Nationals believe it or not (TONS of fab work). You have alot of choices with a 3rd gen, one of the things that makes them so great! But whatever you do, dont hop up the L03, its true you can make them fast, but $ for $ a L98 will be a better deal.

Now, This may be a dumb question or its maby because i'm not awake yet. What's the difference between the L03 and the L98. Is the L98 an all aluminum block and the L03 a cast block? Is that basically the only difference? I'm actually gonna start the engine build over the summer before I buy the camaro. And you brought up something important that I haven't thought about. Regardless, I believe I am gonna use the corvette heads, AFR, or vortech heads. Lingenfelter is getting 440 hp out of a 383 and my engine is gonna follow his same setup so hopefully i can achieve that on a naturally aspirated engine. He used ported vette heads with 2.00/1.56 inch valves. Thanks for the help!
