should i cut my hood?

My car is going to the paint shop on Saturday, so i have to make a decsion soon.....I have the ASCD big block hood. It comes from the factory without the air scoop opened up. I want to cut it open and put a grill in, but i am worried about the structural integrity of the hood after i do this.

i am not worried about any performance gains an open air scoop would make, but rather with apperance, and also my thinking is that more air going through the engine bay, the cooler the engine would run (mainly the headers)

what does everyone think?:hail: :hail:

heres a pic of the big block hood....

I'd cut it open. There was a 4th gen bird running around here with that hood and his was cut open, didn't seem to have any problems out of it.

If you are really concerned with the structural integrity then don't do it. You could paint the part that would have been cut out black so that it looks like it had been cut out.

If its just for looks, I would just paint the area black.

I wouldnt cut it out, if it rains or you wash your car water will get into the engine compartment. Anyways I wouldnt want to even risk messing a good hood up by accidently cuting something out that shouldnt have been.

I'm gonna go with the majority with this one. I'd just leave it alone and paint it black. Too much chance of screwing something up. Plus if you like a clean engine compartment, an opening would just let the elements inside.

I would just leave it alone.....thats what I did on my Big Block Stinger hood on my 84..before it was hit and totaled. I painted that portion black...and added a grill that I cut out. It looked really great....like it was functional.....and didn't hardly cost anything to do.......it would be better to do that then to end up having your hood maybe crack in the future......

I'd also say to leave it alone unless you can get somebody to fabricate a flap (w/ weather stripping) that opens and closes via an vacuum actuator or a toggle switch. Some T/As that have the hood buldge has such a flap, try looking at one to see how to do it.

I say cut it open. I butchered the bottom of my ascd ramair hood to make it functional , and I cut the back of it off and made air ports back there. I noticed that the hood vibrates alot more, but not more than say, a shaker scoop. Its been like that for a good 2 years and it still seems fine. But I can see your concerns, it was hard to cut a huge hole in a 400$ hood! I f you go that route, be careful!!!
