thats also called orange peal, i had some on my 87 formula, i wet sanded it with 400, then painted it and then redanded with 1500. all wet sanding, i did it outside in the rain, cheapest way.

Try the 400 grit then another quick coat and something a little better like 1000ish.
I know ppl who have just gone over it will 400, then 1000, then buffed it till they got the finish they wanted. But its up to you.

it might be fisheye and thats not so easy to take care of, repaint is about the only way to get rid of that
with the golf ball description it sounds more like fisheye

Yes its called Orange peel!!!! Golf ball looks like fisheye,,,and fisheyes are what you get from trying to paint over Amour-all.
First off you do have base/clear paint right?
yah sence your not painting it dont go lower then 1500 or so.
But you should only let a pro do it cause you can easly sand thru the clear and worst of all go thru the base. Then youll have to get it profecioaly buffed with a high speed pro. buffer with swirl remover. And you can easly burn thru the paint with this too so its best to get someone else to do it!

If you sand with 1500 or 2000 all you are going to do is smooth it out a little, you aren't going to get rid of the orange peel. For a better finish you could start out at like 600 and then work your way up to 2000. Thats alot of sanding though and like another said if you don't know what your doing it would be easy to cut through the clear coat and possibly the base coat.

wetsand with 1500 grit and then buff it out and then wax it. it will take care of your problems provided it is orangepeel and not fisheyes. i believe if it's lacquer (unlikely) or single-stage urethane then you can wetsand it. i think it's just acrylic enamel you cannot wetsand. If the paint is new, go to the store the paint came from or the people who painted it to find out exactly what kind of paint was used and if it can be wetsanded.

you can sand enamel after a year or 2... that paint is very slow to harden... if you sand it when it is not yet hardened... it will look nice for a day or two, then become matt (sp?) again... 400 grit is very harsh I wouldn't suggest it... go with 800 water grit... orange peel is a slow process to get rid of... patience and good hands are the only way... after the 800 you go with 1500 then 2000 then you buff the paint... that's how we do it in my bodyshop
