Castrol Super Clean; ODDLY and FRIGHTENINGLY powerful considering it's non-flammable, that's a plus for engine compartments.

EDIT: If you're after brute force, then definately Berryman B12 Chemtool; it'll make you sick but HOT DIGGITY that is some potent stuff!

There have been several subjects covering this. I myself have posted the same question a few weeks ago.

Here are some threads covering the same or relatively same topic with the answer you are looking for.

I don't like using those harsh cleaners (harsh as in give you a migraine for 2 weeks after).

I used simple green and elbow grease. Then 3 months later I had the entire car painted.

As far as not doing anything but spraying on some cleaner and hosing it off, then I'd have to say Castrol Super Clean. I've used it on a Tree Service Bucket Truck that had tons of grime on it and it worked really good. Thats with no scrubing at all, so I can just imagine what it would have done if I did a little hands on detailing.

Get some CD2. I used it on my wifes car (which was filthy) and it made it shine like new. I even use it on my IROC now. Just spray it on, let it sit and then rinse. After it dries, use the second can and it shines it all up. Even the paint.

I've done some half-assed jobs before and this was one of em;

mix four tablespoons of TSP in a gallon of boiling-hot water (AWAY FROM ANY FLAME), stir and emulsify, then use it... Pretty damn good, and its cheap.
