does any one have any advise on how to go about painting break calipers and the rear drum breaks? i was thinking mabey taking them off and sand blasting the rust off and then mabey spray primer and then high temp paint over that
Why would you want to paint brake drums? They're hideous, sorry for performance, and look stupid painted.
That's just my opinion of course
I'm sure someone can give you an answer.

well if you do decide to paint them Id do the calipers in red maybe to accent the car but the drums dont look right red, Id do them in black.

Yeah, drums would look better black.

I did my calipers red and they look good. I also did my drums red and they look good too. Sorry, I don't have any pics right now. But, you could also do what my friend did. He has a Probe and he did his calipers red but painted his drums silver so that they just look like brand new drums.

There is nothing worse then a nice set of wheels with a rust background.I say paint them, but hide them (read: black!)

Okay, we all agree that the rear drums look like @#$ in any color other than black. Now, is anyone gonna answer the man's question?Originally posted by 87camaro kid

Caliper: I painted them with a brush, so I wouldnt have to take them off and re-bleed the brake lines. When I put my rear disks in I spray painted them, just taped off the parts I didnt want to paint, and sprayed.Originally posted by 9T1 Z-28

Drums: Just took them off, wire brushed and sprayed.
I went the easy route and combined it with buying new drums, so all I did was de-grease them and then spray them with hi-temp primer and flat black.
I also did the calipers in red (and a little bit of silver) which was also done in hi-temp paints, but brush painted in place.

I just did my calipers.
I was rebuilding the rear calipers. I took the drivers side one apart and painted the caliper red with Caliper paint, and the bracket and all the associated parts silver, then put it back together. I messed up the paint re-assembling the caliper so when I do the pass side, I'll assemble it and then mask of the parts and paint them.
The front,

and the rear,

And the car,

I just brought a pair of calipers and I just wanted to know if you completely paint the calipers.
Do you paint both sides?
Do you paint where the pads lay?
What don't we paint?

I painted only the parts that are visible.

Has anybody tried powder coating their calibers. I would image it would look better and last longer. If so how much did it cost.
However, there may be parts on the caliber that you should not be painted or powder coated not sure though.
any opinions

I'd powder coat them if I could. One of our club members had his coated and they looked good. They were done by another member that bought one of those powder coating kits that you use at home.

Where can I find the brush-on high temp paint? At kragen all I saw was high-temp spray paint. Since I don't want to take the calipers off, I need the brush on. -89IRO

spray the paint onto some clean cardboard or something and use a brush to lift it off of the cardboard and paint the calipers with the brush.

Yeah, I know about eastwood but I don't know if they have a gloss black brush on. I want to do my calipers black but don't want to take them off the car, so I need a brush on. I'll check them out anyways. -89IRO

I painted the drums on my '90RS black. I removed the drums, applied dual-etch (from Sherwin Williams, it's a phosporic acid based cleaner, similar to naval jelly) brushed them with a metal brush, dried them, and then I sprayed them with black epoxy paint that I bought at a paint store (not a spray can, but I think it would work just as well). I could only find glossy black, but that prevents dust from sticking to it, and it is not noticeable that it is glossy instead of flat black. I think the flat black would turn grayish or brown when it is covered with dust. I used this same paint to paint my T-top edge rails, and look great.
I left my calipers alone, since they're nearly invisible behind the RS wheels. However, if I were to paint them, now there's hi-temp spray paint specially for calipers. Haven't used it so can't tell about the results, but I think it would be a better option than brushing.

My 15x7 firebird rims don't show very much of the drums but if I paint them I'll go for black. Actually if I still have a can of high temp black, I'll do it tomorrow.
/edit: damn, none left.
