Don't you just hate the way those front liscensce plates ruin the front end?

After looking at the slim liscensce plates of the UK it gave me an idea. In IL, there is no getting around the no front plate rule. The US plates are big and ruin the front end look.

I thought I might be able to do this to make it less obtrusive. I figure I can get away with cutting off part of the bottom since its just blank to make the plate slimmer and then mount it lower on the car.

I think I'll attempt to try this when I get my metal sheers back.

Do you have a county or anything else listed on the bottom of the plate??? If so, you may be breaking the law.....

But yea, they totally ruin the front end....

Some states allow you to put it in the windshied, with the dashpad propping it up......

Yet, another reason to move to Floirda, no front plates....

It doesn't list any county below the numbers. It just says land of lincoln. The sticker registration goes on the rear plate. I guess I should ask first. I wish the States offered special sized plates.

Who said there's no getting away with no front plate in IL?

Actually, I got two tickets for no front plate (same cop, two consectutive days.. he was training a new cop so he went around the parking lot at work giving out tickets. Both got thrown out). I had it on for over a year after that, and just took it off again last week.

Don't tell them you want to cut it so you can make the car look better.....

Tell them the bottom of the license plate was damaged or some other creative excuse, the cops won't hassle you as long as they can see the numbers, most cops are gonna notice an inch missing off the plate, especially the front....

MetalliCamaroRS,

I'm not quite as bold as you, lol.

Ok, here is my plan. I'm going to start by moving the plate down first. Then each day I'll cut like 2mm off, a lil bit from the bottom and a lil bit from the top and a lil bit from the sides.
One way or another that front plate is not going to appear so big.

Just take it off

I called the police station and claimed the cops where harassing me cause there was no way I was going to be able to get a bracket in one day so they took the second ticket off. I went to court for the first one. Denny had an auction on eBay for a front plate holder that just ended. He printed it up for me and gave me it to take to court to say that I had already won the bracket prior to getting the ticket, but just hadn't recieved it. It worked, and it got thrown out.

Other friends of mine have gotten tickets for it. They went to court, and the judge just asked if they put it on. They said yes and the ticket was gone.

Just put the plate in the window at least while your in southern IL as the locals won`t say a word to you and 90% of the troopers don`t care. I drove my 86 TA for six months with no front plate and no one said a thing to me.

P.S. now I live in Tennesee and I do not need a front plate and my windows are tinted and its legal.

I live in NJ and you need a front plate. When I was doing work to my front ground effects I needed the plate to be off (took off the GFX to spray them though) After the work was done I liked the look of no plate better so I left it in my back seat. I figured if a cop was going to pull me over I'd tell him I just put the ground effects back on today after fixing them and I was going to put the plate back on when I got home, while showing him all the screws on my floor. Fortuntely I never got pulled over within the 2 months with no plate.

I live in upstate NY and have yet to get pulled over for no plate *knock on wood* I live in a small town and know most of the po-po so they don't bother me, it's the troopers that I have worry about. And when it needs to be inspected I just take it to my friends garage

I never have my front plate on, even though we are supposed to in WI. I've been pulled over about 7 times in 4 years for "No Front Plate" I just put it on and go to the cop shop, show them I have it on, and take it right back off when I get home. Never got a ticket for it just warnings.:lala:

Ive had my IROC for about 3 years now and have never run a front plate. Actually the car was bought new in Illinois and spent its whole life here and has NEVER had a front plate on it. I think ive gotten 2 warnings and one ticket for no front plate. The ticket was $25, whoop dee doo. If you really want to run a front plate but dont like the way it looks, get one of those hide-a-plate thingys the hot rod guys run. Basically, when you're parked the plate stays hidden underneith your front bumper. When you start the car it slides out and up so you're ready to go. Or you could just put it on your airdam under the car. Ive seen a few people get away with it that way.

In CA by law I have to have mine on the front. I dont though, it looks like crap. My dads BMW doesnt have one, his buddies porsche doesnt have one and none of us has ever gotten pulled over for that. I have yet to get pulled over at all in my TA, and I have had it for over two years now. I guess it just depends on the cops. The cops in your area seem to be d!cks.

I thought about the Hideaway plate and mounting on the airdam like I saw a C4 Vette, but there is a problem with that. Sure I can do that now, but when I get the TA GFX and lower it 2", I'll most likely end up loosing that plate to the driveway or any kind of large bump in the road, lol.

On ething that i know worx where i live (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada) is i mounted one of the rear flip down brackets under the front GFX Valance. Its sits real low to the ground but every time is comes in contack with a curb or something... the spring tension sucks it up and it retracts to a 'closed' position where you cant see it.Stop the plate from getting crushed...also i flip it up whever i park so its not so ugly as you all know how ugly a front plate is!

I never thought of that. I think that'll work. Since my car is daily street driver, that plate will most likely get beat up alot. I'll just have to avoid those steep driveways and parking curbs.

i took off my front license plate and have been asked about it three times by cops. i just say that it doesn't fit because of the nose of the car comes to a point and i can't get the license plate to stay on. also, when i drive in massachusetts, its okay not to have a front plate.

used that line a couple of times, its worked for me.

But a while back I remember seeing a 4th gen F-body somewhere that had a Vinyl decal in the windshield that was an exact copy of the license plate. He had it in the lower passenger side corner of the windshield. Seemed like a good idea to me.

I would hate it if I had to have a plate on the front of my car, I think it would look like crap. A couple of years ago they tried to pass some stupid law to help raise money for the state and require you to have a front plate so they could charge more money for the other plate, luckily it didnt get anywhere, people were like, I will pay more for my plate just dont make us run a front plate. Because so many people have plates on the front of there car that say stuff and it is a big buisness down here. You can get away with a lot of stuff here in Florida, I have driven my car with open headers and so has my brother. I have also seen a couple of cars driving around with huge f'kin slicks on them.

Front plates are a joke...

Ive been pulled over four times, always a warning... Even if I did get a ticket I wouldnt put one on, the front end wouldnt look this good with a plate...

Michigan is definitley the very best state to live in if you have a muscle car. No laws for front plates and no emmisions testing. But yea having a front plate totally destroys the look of a sweet f-body. Sweet car formularpm

Well, I'll only be able to use an excuss for so long because I seem to run into the same F###ing cops every day, not to mention the university police who will write you up on any thing no matter how minor. The citations for things like that run like $75-100 down here in Carbondale.

So what states do not require the front plate? So far I have heard MI, FL, and TN. I think I'll plan on heading to a state that doesn't require the front plate after I graduate.

devianb,

just move over here to Indiana!

When I first got my car it had california tags on it front and rear. The front end has four holes from the bracket. my other firebirds never had them.

Maybe Southern Indiana at best. I can't stand living in the Midwest anymore. I can't tell you how many times come real close to falling asleep at the wheel while driving from Carbondale to Champaign/Urbana, IL (200 miles) from looking at miles and miles of Corn and Wheat fields.

I take the back roads home through small towns to keep my sanity.

Does KY or LA have the front plate rule?

Does KY or LA have the front plate rule?

Im in Evansville, and I see KY plates all the time. As far as I know they dont have them. I never really paid that much attention to that though.

I just don't run 'em, though I do keep one under my seat so that I can show him I have it. "I just haven't put it on yet" or something, maybe it'll work, maybe not, but I think 91-92 'birds look horrible with it on so...

Yep, Jackyl, thank G0D for North Carolina. I'm in Norfolk, VA, where I'm supposed to have a front plate, but there's enough NC cars around, that no one notices. I usually stick it on when I take it in for safety inspection, tho..

I took my front plate off over a year ago, but put 4 stainless screws in the holes to dress it up. I also got a bent-up metal bracket off our old van, which I keep behind the seat with the front plate. I put a few 'wrinkles' in the plate, and if anyone has a problem, I'll tell them that someone backed in to the car, bent up the bracket, so I took it off, and haven't got a new one yet. If I get a ticket, I'll just put on the good bracket (it's in the trunk with the spare tire) and get the ticket resolved. Good plan, eh?
