Depends on what your motor and accessories look like. If the motor has some bright colors that clash with the outside paint job, then black is a good way to go.
Otherwise, i feel a body-color engine bay is the way to go.

body color is the way to go.
black is used mainly when costs or low or in race cars where so much work is done you want something that is easily touched up.
the best looking engine bays are body color.

depends.
on my 82, it was totally old school style. carbed 408 SB, bright orange, everything i didnt want to stand out was fogged black to lead your eye away from it.
meanwhile on my 91, i want to leave everything body color..
actually, when i go to paint it, im going to smooth some stuff up and have it totally painted under hood so its nice and shiny paint..
personally i think its dependent upon both whats in the engine compartment, and the color of the car.
a red car fogged black may look kinda wierd, while a silver car with a defined engine "line" of black engine compartment can look cool.....
as long as it looks like it belongs that way, its fine with me.

no one asked what colour is your body. Personally id go with black on my car because my body is silver and putting silver by all the metal pieces would make it all blend together so id choose black to make my motor stand out.

i went with black. the motor is going in my car within the next couple weeks, but i won't get it repainted until next year. as i'm still undecided of the paint color i will choose, black was the best choice for me. plus, it will go great with my chevy orange motor

I'd say body color as well if it's in respecable shape and KEPT clean. Otherwise I think fresh GM Satin black is quite nice. I cleaned my engine bay up quite nicely with some rubbing compound and polish after thorough cleaning. I didn't wax it though so it gets dirty easily and is losing shine.

Ok heres the pictures...before and after!
I don't have much experience, but I took my time and I'm very happy with the result...and I don't regret the body color!

Black here also. Makes the engine especially chrome pieces stand out more. Also if you ever change paint again you don't have to worry about removing engine and shooting the bay all over. Black bays go with any color.
