ok i degreased my engine bay today and i covered the battery and the distributer. ok, i got the distributer a little wet. not like a hose on it but a little when i took the bag off and the water in it spilled on it (maybe a little when i sprayed too). Is it ok if that happens? or what should i start it?

 

damn i'm in deep ****...... after i degreased it and let it dry down well i decided to see if it started.... started up perfect then 15 seconds later it was idleing at 450rpm and acting like it only worked on 3 cylenders so i floored it and it idles nice but the service engine soon was now on and wouldn't go away. wtf do i do?

 

check to see what code got set off and go from there.

If your car does not have the 12 pin DLC connector, you may not be able to manually "flash" your trouble codes. The language "may be possible" appears to suggest that this method should work with most, if not all, 12 pin DLC equipped cars.

DISPLAYING THE TROUBLE CODES
Run a wire/hairpin from Pin 6 to Pin 12 with the ignition off (although on later cars it should be from Pin 5 to Pin 6), then turning the ignition to the on position without starting the engine will flash the "Service Engine Soon" light in the following sequence: flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause Following this "12" code repeating three times will come any trouble codes stored, flashing each of them three times. If you do not see the "12" flash three times, your diagnostic circuit is defective.
Some vehicles will display stored trouble codes, then "12" again, followed by energizing "most system controlled relays." The fuel pump relay will not energize. The idle air control valve will fully extend to enable checking minimum idle speed.

CLEARING THE TROUBLE CODES
Turn the keyswitch to the off position. To clear any trouble codes, disconnect the power feed for 30 seconds. If this is done at the battery, and your car stereo is equipped and programmed with a four digit pin code, you may have to re-enter that as well to use your stereo again. A better place to remove power is at the fuse.

ok none of you have ever seen a problem like this? i mean i got the distributer a little wet and its brand new, its some accell thing. i mean i've been told that water in the bay won't hurt anything. I used a pressure washer to get off the degreeser, its like a 1200psi one.

 

It would help a lot if you found out what code its sending. It only takes two minutes to find out.

 

pressure washer in the engine bay probably wasnt your best move. when you wash off an engine just use a garden hose or else u may damage wires or get water into the weatherpacks connectors. take the dist cap off and make sure its dry, also make sure the shaft is dry, let it air out a few hours with the hood up in the sun w/ the cap off. also take off all the spark plug wires and make sure theres no water in either boots. just let the car dry in the sun with the hood up for a while, then try again. that should tell u where u stand and if u did any real damage or just got stuff wet.

 

pressure washing the engine bay is no problem at lal, i do it all the time so thats ok. you most likely just got stuff wet, but it depends on how long you let it sit before you started the car. if it was only a couple hours, that probably won't do the engine any good. I woudl AT MINIMUM leave the car to dry over night and then start it up the next day.

easiest thing to do would be to just get the code that your'e throwing.

 

i work at a dealership and we wash engine bays all the time, i just did one today that was a 91 jeep inline 6 4.0L and they r always fine. one thing we do tho is keep the egine running while doing it and keep it running for about 10 mins after. on the newer cars they don't always keep the cars on. we don't cover anything and water goes right on the distributer and nothing happens. go figure

 

why do u keep the car running?

 

I just tried that trouble code shooting. My car just kept on doing that sequence over and over. No numbers popped up, and it did not stop with that sequence. What does that mean?
