Hating the color of stock wheels!! Help

Just a general question, I hope someone can help..... I have stock rims on my 85 Z28. The rims are colored gold to match the Iroc lettering down the side of the car. I am getting ready to repaint the car and plan to go with black and change the lettering to red. I tried paint stipper and it didn't do squat. Tried a wire wheel - cleaned the edge great, but it looks like crap on the rest. Is there anything I can buy to get the paint off or am I going to have to just break down and buy new rims?? Any info would be appreciated!

Yeah I second that notion......just tape off the area you don't want pained and try some spray-can paint witha color of your choosing.......

ive actually learned brush paint works better on rims than spray paint, it doesnt flake off or scrach as easy, and no taping to be done if u are good

to answer your question about anything to get the paint off... i highly recommend aircraft stripper ... you can buy it at any autozone or parts store... just spray on (with wheel off car of course) spray it well ... wait 10 min then get like a toothbrush get the hard to reach areas... then spray off with water hose.... becareful not to get it on you skin (it hurts like sh**)

good luck

would that affect the clear coat on the polished parts?

Aircraft paint stripper will take everything off, clear coat and all. It may also take a couple of tries to get the majority of it off. Then you can sand the rest of it.

Yeah, that powder coat on the rims is a PITA. The aircraft stripper is about the only thing that will get it off completely, Might as well do that and polish your wheels again. After al, anything worth doing is worth doing right. If I were you, I'd paint the non-polished parts either a good metallic grey or black.

i agree... i polished my rims in june... i painted them gold again... big mistake ... after a few days of nonstop rain.. road grim and brake dust was all of them ... could not even tell that they were polished .....in a couple of weeks i am going to go with black or gunmetal... IMO it brings the polished surface out a lot better
