Pressure washing engine bay with engine out

What should I tape up or cover up?

What kind of degreaser could I use that wouldn't harm the paint?

I just pulled all of the wires upward and had them laying on the cowl piece. For cleaning, I used a pretty rich mix of SimpleGreen; it worked well against dirt and grease, it doesn't make you sick either. Worked for me anyway!

I used a mix of "tide with bleach" laundry detergent and warm water. mix a scoop of tide in a bucket of warm water, let it disolve all the way, scrub down the bay, let it sit a while to work, then pressure wash, then your ready for paint or whatever.

the results speak for themselves: :

that's the results of the paintjob though, i'd like to see the results of the tide and pressure wash. i sprayed the hell out of everything with simple green at like 10pm, then again at like 10am, used up a whole bottle between the 2 times. then we power washed it at like 11 or 12. it came out alright, a hell of a lot better than before, but not show quality. it would be nice if i had a hot water pressure washer, that would work so much better. we might end up painting the engine bay. i'm thinking of going with flat black or something, cuz i'm not sure what color the final paintjob is going to be.

i used about 5 cans of degreaser, hot water and about 4 hours worth of elbow grease with a tire brush. check out the results, not half bad considering it had probably never ever been cleaned.

Elbow grease is the key...don't be afraid to get in there and scrub!

just be sure to avoid the critical parts that are still there. after all, wiring harnesess and brake resevouirs werent designed to handle 4500psi of water.
