lowering a trans am

ok i have absolutely no clue on howto lower my car. I wanna lower it 2 inches everywhere. I've seen somewhere peopl cutting part of the springs off and other places where they got new springs. Which one do most people normally do? Which would do better also?

alright how long are the old ones and how long would they need to be to get 2 inches lower. WOuld you jsut subtract 2 inches from original springs?

*update* nevermind that, i went to summit's website and they had springs there with how much they lowered the car.

cutting coils isn't the greatest of ideas sicne it can sometimes throw off the balance terribly. check out all the stores, summit, jegs, and our sponsors up top for prices on springs to lower your car.

On the other hand, unless you really botch it, what have you got to loose? Unless your springs are in really good shape, you're probably not going to get much for them selling them used, so if you cut them and they work out, you saved yourself some money. If you cut them and it didn't come out right, you can just by the lower springs then, right? Unless you're using your car as a daily driver, and you're extremely concerned about it, I don't see what you have to loose. Anyone disagree here?

yeah sure d00d, i'm only 16 and dont got a job just yet(got two interviews tomorow), so once i do and pay my mom back her money for my new paint job, i'll start opn the strings. And yeah i'll give you feedback on how it goes.

I'll have to look up though, for most of the springs it has a different lowerage for front and back. I'll have to read up on that first.

Then i'll take pics for everyone to see.

ah thats cool, i though you might be one of these older guys on here that didn't want to trust some 16 year old ya know, yeah. I'll have to talk to my uncle on cutting the coils and stuff. He does stuff like that, not for a living but for a hobby.

Theres benefits to using aftermarket lowering springs, and for as difficult as it is to install the front springs, Id just do it right the first time. If you only care about lowering the car, they might work, but if you care at all about handling, get a set of Eibach, Intrax, Hotchkis, etc. FYI, its a good idea to align the car after you change the ride height.

don't forget to use shorter endlinks on your sway bars. If you drop your car either by clipping the springs or using new ones, its a good idea to have the sway bars level horizontally with the control arms.
